Our demand for water is constantly increasing. Every year there are more and more people in the world.
Factories turn out more and more products and need more and more water. We live in a world of water. But almost
all of it - about 97%-is in the oceans. This water is too salty to be used for drinking, farming, and manufacturing.
Only about 3% of the world's water is fresh. Most of this water is not easily available to man because it is locked in
glaciers and icecaps.
There is as much water on earth today as there ever was or will ever be. Most of the water we use finds its
way to the oceans. There, it is evaporated by the sun. It then falls back to the earth as rain. Water is used and
reused over again. It is never used up. Although the world as a whole has plenty of fresh water, some regions have
a water shortage. Rain does not fall evenly over the earth. Some regions are always too dry, and others too wet. A
region that usually gets enough rain may suddenly have a serious dry spell and another region may be flooded with
too much rain.

ADVERTISEMENTS
11
Perhaps the most creative use of language in newspaper is in the advertisements. The
writers have to catch and ( 41)……the reader’s attention. They often ( 42)……this with a play on
words. You read the words and understand them one way and then suddenly you ( 43)…..that
another interpretation is possible. Through the ambiguity the advertisement has caught your
attention- and the advertiser ( 44)…..you’ll buy the product.
Under the picture of a new car are the words: “Not another family saloon.” The dual
interpretation of that phrase is dependent on how it is pronounced. Misread it by putting the stress
on the second word thereby projecting a message the advertiser would clearly not want , and this (
45)…..you look again and pay conscious attention to the alternative message.
Advertising copywriters frequently ( 46) …..use of idioms. One advertisement showed
girls wearing different coloured jeans, but none the traditional blue ones. Underneath were
words: “Jeanius is
( 47)…..ideas out of the blue.” On level, that ( 48)…..the jeans are not ordinary blue jeans but
ones in a range of colours. But there is also the suggestion that these new jeans are a sudden piece
of inspiration, a stroke of genius. “ Out of the blue” is an idiom which means quite unexpectedly
and genius often
( 49)…..getting a brilliant idea suddenly. That’s very clever, but it’s not quite the end of it,
because it’s not genius they are ( 50)……about, but jeanius. That is another play on words, the
product they are selling, after all, is a pair of jeans.

Our eyes and ears might be called transformers because they sense the light and sound around us
and turn them into electrical impulses that the brain can interpret. These electrical impulses that
have been transformed by the eyes and ears reach the brain and are turned into messages that we
can interpret. For the eye, the process begins as the eye admits light waves, bends them at the
cornea and lens, and then focuses them on the retina. At the back of each eye, nerve fibers
bundle together to form optic nerves, which join and then split into two optic tracts. Some of the
fibers cross so that part of the input from the right visual field goes into the left side of the brain,
and vice versa. The process in the ear is carried out through sensory cells that are carried in fluidfilled canals and that are extremely sensitive to vibration. Sound that is transformed into
electricity travels along nerve fibers in the auditory never. These fibers form a synapse with
neurons that carry the messages to the auditory cortex on each side of the brain.
