WORKSHEET 2: PETER RIPKEN- A LIFE IN LITERATURE- HELPING EXILED ARTIST AROUND THE
WORLD
Peter Ripken loves (1) ......................................... The man from Frankfurt, Germany reads books by
writers all over the world. And he learned years ago that not all nations permit writers to express themselves
freely. In fact, free expression can be quite dangerous in many places.
So, Ripken decided to act. He helped (2) ...................................... an organization to protect writers. The
International Cities of Refuge Network, ICORN, was born in 1993. Its founders sought to persuade cities, not
central government, to give refuge to persecuted writers.
“I got involved in the program where persecuted writers are being given (3) ...................................... in
cities in Germany, and Frankfurt was one of the first cities and I was involved right from the beginning, from
the mid 90s, to set up this program. The first (4) ...................................... was called “International
Parliament of Writers.” In 2006, then we came together and established ICORN - International Cities of Refuge
Network.”
It was not his original plan. He had a different view of his future as a young man.
“When I was 15 I was thinking because of my reading (5) ...................................... to become a bookseller
when I was 15, sort of graduating from primary school. And then my mother said, ‘You do your high school
diploma first and then you can still become a bookseller’ and so on. So she influenced me on that.”
A bookseller he did not become. Instead, in the late 1960s, Peter Ripken began a five year stint as a manager in
an aid organization working in Africa. But his affinity for the written word remained strong. And then he got a
call.
“Then I was being asked, ‘Can you help us, somebody has defected our radio station?’ So, I worked for three
years at that radio station, Voice of Germany that is the (6) ...................................... to Voice of America.
I worked as a deputy editor for the Africa section and I liked it. But when somebody else came and said ‘we
have this organization promoting African, Asian, Latin American literature and we need somebody with your
background to follow a person who has left us, can you do it, do you want to do it?’”
Ripken did not hesitate.
“I said yes. I thought maybe I do that five years but I did it for 20 because it was so interesting meeting authors,
traveling to literary conferences, doing workshops with publishers and authors. That was so varied, so
interesting that I did it for 20 years!”
Peter Ripken grew up reading German authors. But his (7) ...................................... broadened to other
European and American literature. Then, he found what he calls books ‘outside of the norm.’ This helped grow
his interest in political developments in other regions.
“I read mostly novels. I started early reading African, Arab, Indian authors, Latin American authors. That was
one thing, and going with it I had a strong interest in political developments in other continents. I'm especially
interested in political developments in Africa and the Arab world. And I've made efforts to find out by
traveling, by meeting people, by going to conferences. And these two (8) ...................................... have
shaped my life.”
7
Peter Ripken has written one book himself. At the height of the anti-apartheid struggle, he wrote a handbook on
Southern Africa. But poetry came along later for Ripken, and with a little pressure.
“I remember a Moroccan poet at one time told me, ‘You Europeans, you are doing everything to kill poetry.’
And I wanted to prove to him that I was not killing poetry, so I read poetry and I edited anthologies.”
Last year Peter Ripken retired after (9) ...................................... years as ICORN’s chairman. But he is
still active in the organization. He and many others are developing relationships with new partners and
supporters. The goal is to increase the group’s capacity to protect and promote writers and artists at risk around
the world. More than 60 cities have joined the network, and no less than 170 writers and artists have found
shelter in an ICORN member city.
In 2016, International Cities of Refuge Network celebrated its 10-year anniversary.
And Ripken says he will continue to stay busy in the world of arts and literature.
“There’s one project we are setting up a cultural center in southern Spain for encounters between writers and
artists from Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Spain, France and Germany. I'm involved there. I'm involved in an
(10)......................................center in Southern Africa. I am preparing with a friend a handbook of African
literature. And corresponding with people and, partly I must say, also traveling.”
Peter Ripken hopes to be remembered as somebody who promoted creativity and supported literature as a
political tool and source of enjoyment.
“At one time I was over political. For example, I read literature at a time as literature with a “brandish fist,” as a
political weapon. I looked at the content and it was only later that I discovered that literature in itself is
pleasure. Reading can move you, enlighten you and to convey to others this notion that I think is what I believe
is my main motivation. What makes me tick!”

WORKSHEET 4: WHO WANTS TO REMOVE TRANS FATS FROM FOOD.
There may be something in your food that you cannot see and cannot (1)................. But it could be killing you.
It is an artificial oil commonly called trans fat.
"Trans fat is a (2)........................... chemical that has been added to our food supply and accounts for an
estimated more than 500,000 deaths every year.” That is Dr. Tom Frieden. He is head of the public health
organization Resolve to Save Lives. He was the (3) ......................................of the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention in the United States from 2009 to 2017.
On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced a plan to help countries remove trans fats from
the world’s food supply within the next five years.
Frieden
says
the
move
is unprecedented.
“This
is
the
first
time
there
has
ever
been
an (4) ...................................... program to get rid of -- not an infectious disease like polio or small pox -- but
a non-communicable disease, in this case the risk factor for heart attacks that trans fat causes. This is an
unprecedented move. And it’s really important that government and communities around the world replace
artificial trans fats with healthier oils.”
What is artificial trans fat?
Artificial trans fat is made by adding hydrogen to vegetable oil. Food makers use this low-priced oil so food
will stay fresh longer.
“Although trans fats extend the shelf life of food, we think the priority should be the length and health of
human life. That’s more important than the shelf life of food. There are alternatives to industrially produced
trans fats.”
Trans fat can be found in foods such as donuts, cakes, cookies and deep-fried foods. Baked goods that sit on
grocery shelves for many months but still remain soft and moist usually (50...................................... trans fat.
This is because the oil remains solid at room temperature. And Frieden says this is why it is dangerous to eat.
"Trans fat is tasteless. It's solid at room temperature, but it's also solid at body temperature in
your coronary arteries."
Studies have found that trans fat raises cholesterol levels in the blood and (6) ......................................the risk of
heart disease.
10
High-income countries have either banned these artificial fats or are in the process of banning them because of
their connection to heart (7) ....................................... The Associated Press news agency says more than 40
high-income countries have been working on eliminating trans fats from foods.
Denmark banned trans fats in their food 15 years ago. In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has
called for food makers to stop using it by June 2018.
The World Health Organization is urging (8) ...................................... of low- and middle-income countries to
do the same. Experts at the WHO say that three-quarters of the world's deaths from cardiovascular disease
happen in low- and middle-income countries.
Where trans fats have been banned, heart attacks and deaths from heart disease have dropped greatly.
The WHO plan calls on governments to take specific steps. They include (9) ...................................... trans fats
with healthier oils such as olive oil, creating public awareness of the harms of trans fats, and enforcing antitrans fat policies and laws.
If people stop eating (10) ...................................... made with trans fats, more than 17 million lives could be
saved over the next 25 years. Also a major source of heart disease will be eliminated.

WORKSHEET 5: HAWAII PASSES BILL TO BAN SUN CARE PRODUCTS THAT HARM CORAL
Lawmakers in the American state of Hawaii have passed a bill (1)............................. sunscreens that can
harm coral reefs.
If the state’s governor signs the bill, Hawaii would become the first state in the country to (2)...................
such a law.
The bill would ban the sale of sun care products that contain the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate.
Scientists say the two substances can harm coral, an (3) .................. part of the ocean ecosystem and popular
with tourists.
The chemicals are found in more than 3,500 sunscreens worldwide, including Coppertone and Banana Boat
products.
Senator Mike Gabbard introduced the bill. He told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser (4) .................., “Amazingly,
this is a first-in-the-world law.”
He added, “Our island (5) .................., surrounded by coral reefs, is the perfect place to set the gold standard for
the world to follow."
Craig Downs is a scientist. His 2015 peer-examined study found that oxybenzone threatened (6) ..................
reefs. He found that as much as 14,000 tons of sunscreen ends up in coral reefs each year.
He said the Hawaii bill is “the first real chance that local reefs have to recover.”
(7) ..................of the bill question the science.
Tina Yamaki is the president of the Retail Merchants of Hawaii. She said there are still not enough independent
studies on the issue to know whether the chemicals cause harm to coral. And, she said, the ban might keep
people from buying sunscreen products from local stores.
The American Chemistry Council also opposed the bill, noting (8) .................. over the risks of sun damage to
skin.
Sharon Har was one of four Hawaiian lawmakers who voted against the bill.
She said, “Yes, we must protect the environment -- it is our number one resource -- but at the end of the day,
studies have pointed to global warming, (9) .................. contact, coastal development” as other major threats to
coral.
Many sunscreen manufacturers already sell “reef-friendly” products. And companies still have some time to sell
products that (10) ..................the two chemicals; the ban would not take effect until January 2021.
And that’s What’s Trending Today.

WORKSHEET 6: EVEREST CLIMBER BREAKS NEW RECORD
The most (1)............................. female climber of Mount Everest broke another record in reaching the top of the
mountain a ninth time.
The climber is Lhakpa Sherpa. She is a 44-year-old (2) ............................. mother who lives in the United States
with her three children. She was born in Nepal and has been climbing for many years.
Sherpa was guiding about 50 people up the mountain when she (3) ............................. her latest climb on May
16. This broke her own record for the most climbs of Mount Everest by a woman. Her first successful attempt
came in 2000, and she completed her eighth climb last spring.
She told the Associated Press the ninth climb was her hardest one yet. She said (4) ............................. wind and
snow forced the group to wait a few days before making their final climb to the top.
One member of the group was Sherpa’s brother, Mingma, who (5).......................... a mountaineering company
in Nepal. “Only two of our clients did not make it, but most of them made it to the top and were happy,” Sherpa
reported.
Lhakpa Sherpa says she hopes her climbs will (6) ............................. women everywhere to keep reaching for
their own dreams. “If an uneducated woman who is a single mother can climb Everest nine times, any woman
can (7) ............................. their dreams.”
Sherpa never got the chance to get a full (8) .............................. She began working at a young age in jobs
providing assistance and carrying supplies for Everest climbers. She now works as a dishwasher at a Whole
Foods Market in West Hartford, Connecticut.
In an interview last month with espnW, Sherpa said she never does much (9) ..................... for her Everest
climbs.
“My training is here...washing dishes, taking out garbage. I want a hard job,” she said. She told the publication
that many climbers see Everest not just as a physical test, but also as a spiritual experience.
"We believe Everest is a god,” she said. “The Earth and the mother. Mount Everest and I have a connection. I
13
feel it talking when snow blows on the top of the mountain.”
Sherpa told the Associated Press she still feels healthy and fit enough to keep (10) ............................. for years
to come. “People who are 70 years old are still climbing Everest, I am no where there,” she said. She plans to
climb the mountain again next year.
Nepalese mountaineer Kami Rita holds the record for most completed Everest climbs. The 48-year-old has
reached the top of the mountain 22 times.
