Their teachers, Mr. Sanchez and Miss Anderson, just told them good news. They are having a party to celebrate winning the choir competition. Mr. Sanchez says that students will plan the party. Parents will help. Miss Anderson asks the students what kind of party they want. The students discuss some different ideas. They choose to have a picnic at a park. They will decorate and have food. They will have games, too. It will be fun. 2 ca32os_lay_070109af_ll.indd 2 1/9/07 1:10:55 AM DIGITAL FINAL PROOF Students will decorate for the party. Mr. Sanchez asks for helpers to plan the food and games for the party. Some helpers will make decorations. Others will work at the party. The workers will help serve food and drinks. Some students will help clean up after the party. Mr. Sanchez wants students to sign up to help. He puts a sheet of paper on a table. Many students sign up. Six sign up to help with food. Miss Anderson says to plan for 36 people at the Party. There will be 30 students and 6 adults. 3 ca32os_lay_070109af_ll.indd 3 1/9/07 1:11:00 AM DIGITAL FINAL PROOF Students vote for the kind of sandwich they want to eat. Mike and Kayla will help with the food. They decide to make sandwiches because most people like them. Mike’s favorite sandwich is turkey on a bun. Kayla’s favorite sandwich is cheese on bread. They decide to make those two kinds of sandwiches. How many of each do they need? To find out, they ask for a vote. Each student in the 30-member club votes. Including Mike, 20 students want turkey on a bun. The rest, including Kayla, want cheese on bread. 4 ca32os_lay_070109af_ll.indd 4 1/9/07 1:11:12 AM DIGITAL FINAL PROOF Kayla subtracts. 30 – 20 = 10 There are 30 students in the club. Kayla knows that 20 students want turkey on buns. She figures out that 10 students want cheese on bread. She says that two times as many students want turkey as cheese. Mr. Sanchez says to plan the same for adults. He thinks twice as many adults will also want turkey sandwiches as cheese. There are 6 adults. There should be 4 turkey sandwiches and 2 cheese sandwiches for them. Now Kayla and Mike can make a shopping list. They need enough food to make 24 turkey sandwiches and 12 cheese sandwiches. First, they figure out how much turkey they will need. Mike’s mom will buy turkey in packs of 10 servings. Three packs are enough for 24 sandwiches. They will have 6 servings left over. If they find packs with 8 servings, they will still need 3 packs. There will be no turkey left over. If they find packs of 12 servings, they will need only 2 packs. 6 ca32os_lay_070109af_ll.indd 6 1/9/07 1:11:33 AM DIGITAL FINAL PROOF Kayla and Mike need to buy buns for the turkey sandwiches. Buns are often sold in packs of 8. Mike’s mom says they will need 3 packs to make 24 sandwiches. If they find buns in packs of 12, they will need only 2 packs. Now they know how much food to buy to make 24 turkey sandwiches. Mike adds this information to a shopping list. He does not want to forget anything when they get to the store. Next, Mike and Kayla decide how much bread and cheese to buy. How many slices of cheese should they put on each sandwich? Mike says he puts 2 slices of cheese on a sandwich. They will need 24 slices of cheese. 12 x 2 = 24 Cheese comes in packs of 10 slices. They will need 3 packs. Three packs have 30 slices in all. 3 x 10 = 30 There will be 6 cheese slices left over. 30 – 24 = 6 ca32os_lay_070109af_ll.indd 8 1/9/07 1:11:52 AM DIGITAL FINAL PROOF Brea d: es 2 loaves of 15 slic ft over 15 + 15 = 30 6 le Cheese: servings 3 packages of 10 ft over 3 x 10 = 30 6 le Shopping List Turkey: 12 servings 2 packages of (24 servings) s s of 8 serving e g a ck a p 3 r O (24 servings) gs s of 10 servin Or 3 package (30 servings) Buns: 12 servings 2 packages of (24 servings) s 8 servings Or 3 package (24 servings) Kayla and Mike are hungry. Mike’s mom makes them sandwiches. Kayla reads the bread label and learns that there are 15 slices in a loaf. They will need 2 loaves. There will be 6 slices of bread left over. They will have enough food to make 3 more cheese sandwiches. Mike says this is okay because some people might eat more than one sandwich. Mike finishes the shopping list and puts it in his pocket. They want to make a salad. Maria says her family has a recipe for good fruit salad and that everyone loves it. They always prepare it for family gatherings. Her dad will help make the salad because it requires slicing lots of fruit. Maria and Claire go to the kitchen to find the recipe for the fruit salad. It has strawberries, bananas, oranges, apples, and grapes in it. Claire says the salad sounds good, and she thinks everyone at the picnic will enjoy it. 10 ca32os_lay_070109af_ll.indd 10 1/9/07 1:12:11 AM DIGITAL FINAL PROOF Shopping List 9 apples 9 bananas 9 oranges 54 strawberries 72 grapes ngs) ser vwi berries 4 ( Sala d 6 strapes Fruitple gra 1 ap nana 8 1 ba nge a, banarnies. 1 ora e h t slice rawber ix fruit. Claire and Maria need 36 servings of salad for the party, but Maria’s recipe makes only 4 servings. Maria wonders how to make enough fruit salad for 36 people. 9 x 4 = 36 Claire says they must multiply everything in the recipe by 9, and then they will have enough fruit salad. Claire and Maria read the recipe together and multiply each ingredient by 9. Claire makes a shopping list. She lists each item they need and how much of it they need. Maria’s dad will take them to the store. 11 ca32os_lay_070109af_ll.indd 11 1/9/07 1:12:16 AM DIGITAL FINAL PROOF Carlos thinks they should have plenty of water for everyone. Jacob and Carlos help plan the party. They are in charge of drinks. They discuss how many to buy. Jacob says they should buy 2 drinks for each person. The weather will be hot. People will play games, and everyone will be thirsty. One drink each might not be enough. Carlos thinks they should buy water and maybe juice, too. That way, people will have a choice of what to drink. Carlos and Jacob decide to buy juice and water. They will buy extra water to make sure they do not run out of drinks. 12 ca32os_lay_070109af_ll.indd 12 1/9/07 1:12:21 AM DIGITAL FINAL PROOF Jacob and Carlos go to the store. The store sells six-packs of juice. They buy 6 six-packs. 6 x 6 = 36 The store sells cases of water. There are 24 bottles in a case. They buy 2 cases. 24 + 24 = 48 Carlos says 2 cases will give them 12 extra bottles of water. It will be good to have extra in case someone is very thirsty. 48 – 36 = 12 That will be enough to drink. Now the food for the picnic is planned. They will serve sandwiches, salad, and drinks. The day of the picnic has arrived! Everyone in the chorus club worked hard to plan and prepare. The decoration team painted bright banners and hung them up. They decorated the tables, too. The game team planned many games. One game even uses water balloons! The weather is perfect. It is sunny and warm. Everyone enjoys the games. They play very hard. Soon they are thirsty. Jacob and Carlos offer water from a cooler full of ice. At last, it is time to eat. 14 ca32os_lay_070109af_ll.indd 14 1/9/07 1:12:32 AM DIGITAL FINAL PROOF Everything is ready for the picnic. Kayla and Mike help the parents serve turkey and cheese sandwiches. Claire and Maria scoop colorful fruit salad onto plates. Jacob and Carlos hand out cold juice and water. Everyone talks and laughs. There is plenty to eat. They all have a great time. Now it is time to clean up. Mr. Sanchez thanks the teams for their help. Miss Anderson says that their planning made the picnic fun. The students smile. They are the perfect party planners! The picnic was a great way to celebrate winning the choir competition. 15 ca32os_lay_070109af_ll.indd 15 1/9/07 1:12:37 AM DIGITAL FINAL PROOF Glossary = (equal sign) a symbol used to show that two numbers have the same value Example: 12 = 12 x (multiplication sign) a symbol placed between two numbers to show that the first number is to be multiplied by the second number Example: 2 x 3 = 6 case a container of like things packaged together, such as a case of water bottles loaf bread or other food that is baked in one piece and then sliced into smaller pieces multiply when you combine equal groups, you can multiply to find how many in all serving an amount of food for one person Photo Credits: cover, title page, p. 4: © Michael Newman/Photo Edit; pp. 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15: Russell Pickering; p. 8: © Corbis; p. 12: © Bill Aron/Photo Edit 16 ca32os_lay_070109af_ll.indd 16 1/9/07 1:12:37 AM DIGITAL FINAL PROOF Think and Respond 1. One type of chicken comes in a package that has 6 servings. How many servings are in 5 packages? 2. One apple can be cut into 4 slices. How many slices can be made from 7 apples? 3. Look at the recipe on page 11. Suppose Maria wanted to serve 8 people instead of 4. How would the recipe need to change in order to serve 8 people? 4. At the store, suppose this was the only way to buy turkey. 2 packages of 8 servings 2 packages of 10 servings Which packages would you buy to make 24 turkey sandwiches with as little turkey left over as possible?
