FOREWORD This textbook is compiled to meet the needs of students systemizing the knowledge about English learned in TOEIC 1, TOEIC 2, and TOEIC 3 together with upgrading their basic English knowledge and practicing skills in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing in order to not only equip students with the ability to communicate and use English in the learning and working environment but build a solid foundation for TOEIC 5 as well. Hopefully, after completing TOEIC 4, students can achieve TOEIC test scores within the range of 350-400. We are aware of the deficiencies that remain in the textbook in spite of the efforts to make it an efficient aid in the study of TOEIC course. Needless to say, the compilers will be greatly indebted for all constructive feedbacks sent to the General English Department via [email protected]. i TABLE OF CONTENTS Page FOREWORD ............................................................................................... i TABLE OF CONTENTS ............................................................................ ii TEACHING PLAN .................................................................................... iii END-OF-TERM TEST FORMAT ........................................................... iv GUIDED STUDY UNIT 1 .................................................................................................. 01 UNIT 2 .................................................................................................. 08 UNIT 3 ................................................................................................. 15 UNIT 4 .................................................................................................. 22 UNIT 5 ................................................................................................. 29 UNIT 6 ................................................................................................. 36 UNIT 7 ................................................................................................. 43 UNIT 8 ................................................................................................. 50 UNIT 9 ................................................................................................. 56 UNIT 10 ............................................................................................... 62 UNIT 11 ............................................................................................... 68 UNIT 12 ............................................................................................... 74 UNIT 13 ............................................................................................... 80 UNIT 14 ............................................................................................... 86 UNIT 15 ................................................................................................ 92 SELF-STUDY END-OF-TERM SAMPLE TEST ......................................................... 100 TOEIC PRACTICE TEST ..................................................................... 117 ANSWERS FOR END-OF-TERM SAMPLE TEST ........................... 161 ANSWERS FOR TOEIC PRACTICE TEST ...................................... 162 TOEIC TEST SCORE CONVERSION TABLE ................................. 163 GLOSSARY ............................................................................................. 164 REFERENCES ........................................................................................ 171 ii TEACHING PLAN TOEIC PREPARATION COURSE TOEIC 4 (15 weeks x 4 periods = 60 periods) SECTION 1 WEEK UNIT SECTION 2 SECTION 3 GRAMMAR AND READING COMPREHENSION LISTENING SPEAKING VOCABULARY & GRAMMAR INCOMPLETE TEXTS READING COMPREHENSION 1 UNIT 1 PART 1, 2, 3, 4 PART 5 PART 6 PART 7 TOPIC 4.1 Presentation, Discussion, Q & A 2 UNIT 2 PART 1, 2, 3, 4 PART 5 PART 6 PART 7 TOPIC 4.2 Presentation, Discussion, Q & A 3 UNIT 3 PART 1, 2, 3, 4 PART 5 PART 6 PART 7 TOPIC 4.3 Presentation, Discussion, Q & A 4 UNIT 4 PART 1, 2, 3, 4 PART 5 PART 6 PART 7 TOPIC 4.4 Presentation, Discussion, Q & A 5 UNIT 5 PART 1, 2, 3, 4 PART 5 PART 6 PART 7 TOPIC 4.5 Presentation, Discussion, Q & A 6 UNIT 6 PART 1, 2, 3, 4 PART 5 PART 6 PART 7 TOPIC 4.6 Presentation, Discussion, Q & A 7 UNIT 7 PART 1, 2, 3, 4 PART 5 PART 6 PART 7 TOPIC 4.7 Presentation, Discussion, Q & A 8 UNIT 8 PART 1, 2, 3, 4 PART 5 PART 6 PART 7 Speaking Test (in pairs) 9 UNIT 9 PART 1, 2, 3, 4 PART 5 PART 6 PART 7 Speaking Test (in pairs) 10 UNIT 10 PART 1, 2, 3, 4 PART 5 PART 6 PART 7 Speaking Test (in pairs) 11 UNIT 11 PART 1, 2, 3, 4 PART 5 PART 6 PART 7 Speaking Test (in pairs) 12 UNIT 12 PART 1, 2, 3, 4 PART 5 PART 6 PART 7 Speaking Test (in pairs) 13 UNIT 13 PART 1, 2, 3, 4 PART 5 PART 6 PART 7 Speaking Test (in pairs) 14 UNIT 14 PART 1, 2, 3, 4 PART 5 PART 6 PART 7 Speaking Test (in pairs) 15 UNIT 15 and Review PART 1, 2, 3, 4 PART 5 PART 6 PART 7 - To: Rob Johnson [[email protected]] From: Gerald Mills [[email protected]] Subject: Employee absenteeism Rob, The company is going to institute a new absenteeism policy next year, but they want to try some pilot programs around the country to see which one works the best. The program they want your branch to use is called the bankable-sick-day program. What happens is, for every month that an employee is not absent from work, they get to bank 8 more hours of vacation time. This is up to a total of 40 hours, or one extra week in vacation. If a person is sick then they lose not only their pay for that particular day but also the opportunity to bank an extra vacation day for that month. Attached is some more reading material on this program and the official policy addenda. We are planning on starting this program on the first day of May, and it will run until the end of April, next year. By watching to see which program proves to be the most effective at eliminating or decreasing absenteeism, we will know which one to adopt permanently. If you have any questions about this program, you can either contact me by e-mail, or give me a call at (677) 455-8975. Sincerely, Gerald Mills Vice President of Human Resources Alliance Networking 12 To: Gerald Mills [[email protected]] From: Rob Johnson [[email protected]] Subject: The new absenteeism policy Dear Gerald, I received your e-mail and I read over all of the policy information in your attachment. I think I understand most of what you want our branch to do, but I have a few questions. First, what happens if an employee is late? Should that be treated as in the old policy of just docking the employee for as many minutes as they are late, or is there something new that should be done? Secondly, there are a few employees working at this branch which we have discussed in the past who have some severe absenteeism problems. We have not been able to dismiss them because they have not gone so far as to break our company’s termination limit. I am assuming that because we want to test this policy we are just going to let them continue on as usual to see if their behavior changes. I am planning on having a meeting with people on March 20th to tell them about the new policy and answer any of their questions at that time. That way I believe we will be all ready for the May 1st start date. Yours truly, Rob Johnston Director Atlanta Branch 26. According to the first e-mail, what is the company going to try? A. Different vacation dates B. Some new pilot programs C. New training policies D. A new bank 27. What was NOT mentioned about the new policy in the first e-mail? A. When to have a meeting on it B. When the policy will go into effect C. How vacation time can be increased D. The limits of bankable vacation time 28. When is Rob planning on having a meeting? A. March 20th B. April 30th C. May 1st D. May 31st 29. What is Rob unsure about? A. When to start the program B. Where to find policy material C. How to treat late employees D. How to bank vacation days 30. What does Rob assume that the company wants to learn about the policy? A. How many vacation days it will provide B. When employees will call in sick again C. Which employees will not want to follow this policy D. How it will affect employees with absenteeism problems 13 SECTION 3: SPEAKING TOPIC 4.2 GENERATION GAPS Suggested Questions 1.
