Objectives:  Knowledge: o General knowledge: Students get some information about what a computer can do to help us in our daily lives. o Language: Vocabulary: Different parts of a computer system such as CPU, VDU, CD ROMs,….; words and phrases to talk about uses of the computer in our daily life: storage device, calculating machine, communicator,…..  Skills: By the end of the lesson: Sts will be able to develop such reading micro-skills as guessing meaning in context, scanning for specific ideas, skimming for general information. Sts can talk about uses of the computer in our daily life. 2. Teaching aids:  Teacher’s: + Textbook + Computer + Real object (to teach vocabulary) + Projector (for Warm-up, Before you read, While you read (Task1, 2) ) + 4 sheets of A4 Paper (for Task 3) + Speaker + Visual presenter (for checking vocabulary, Task 3)  Sts’: textbooks, board, chalk, draft paper. B. PROCEDURES Teacher’s activities B1. Organization: Time - Greet the teachers. - Reply - Greet the Sts - Introduce the Ts attending the class. - Ask for health and attendance B2. Warm-up Guessing game - Divide the class into two teams and introduce the rules: watch a video clip and then in turn guess the letters appearing in the word. The T turns the hand of the clock to decide how many points each team gets if they guess one correct letter. When it is one’s turn, the team can speak out the word to double their present score if they have at least 50 points. The winner is the team with more points. Sts’ activities 1-2’ 3-5’ - Listen to the rules carefully, then work in groups, guess the letters to find out the word. Matching - Ask Ps to look at the illustrations of different parts of a computer system and match each numbered item with one of the words or phrases in the box. Have Sts work in pairs in 1 and half a minute. - Call on 1 student to give their answers and check with the whole class. (use computer, projector) - Ask Ps to listen and repeat these words and phrases once in chorus. 2. Vocabulary - Pre-teach some new words and phrases + miraculous (adj) (use synonyms: wonderful, fantastic) + be capable of (show a picture and give an example) + calculating machine (n.p) (use a picture) + calculation (n) (give an example) + speed up (v) (give a situation) + with lightning speed (idm) (explanation) + storage device (n.p) (use real object) + communicator (n) (explanation) - Have Sts listen, repeat the words, phrases in chorus and then individually. * Checking vocabulary: Bingo - Ask Sts to write four of the words and phrases individually in 30 seconds without looking at the books and notebooks. - Choose four words or phrases randomly and read aloud. Ask Sts to listen and put a tick beside the word if they hear it. Tell them to say “Bingo” if they have all four ticks. (If some Sts say “Bingo”, T picks up one writing to show on the screen for checking spelling and gives marks) ( use computer and visual presenter) II. Task 1: Matching - Introduce the task and check to make sure that Sts know the meaning of some words in column B such as: link, mysterious, physical and that they know what to do with this task. - Ask Sts to work individually in 3 minutes to match the words in A with their definitions in B. (T goes around to observe, provide help when necessary) - Have Sts discuss the answers with a friend. - Call on some Sts to read and explain their answers in front of the class. - Check and give corrective feedback (use computer, projector) - Ask Sts to listen, repeat the words, phrases once in chorus. 2. Task 2: Passage Headings - Tell Sts to read the passage to choose the best title for it. (have them work individually in 3 minutes) - Elicit the answers from Sts, encourage Sts to explain their choice and give correct answer. (use computer, projector) 3. Task 3: Answering questions. - Introduce the requirement of the task - Tell Sts to read the questions and underline the key words and phrases to make sure that they understand the questions. - Divide the class into 4 groups: 2 groups deal with question 1, the others deal with question 2. Ask them to write the answers on paper in 3 minutes. (T delivers a sheet of paper to each group) - Have Sts exchange their writings for peer correction. - Pick up 2 writings to check in front of the class and give marks. (Use computer, visual presenter) III. After you read. - Ask Sts to work in pairs in 2 minutes to discuss uses of the computer in our daily 4’ - Listen carefully. - Do the task individually: guess the meanings of the words in context and match. -Discuss the answers in pairs. - Give their answers and explain. - Correct their work Suggested answers: 1. a 2. e 3. a 4. b - Listen, repeat in chorus. 5. d 4’ - Do the task individually. - Give their answers and explain their choice. Answer: C. What can the computer do? 8’ - Listen carefully. - Read the questions and underline the key words and phrases. - Do the task in groups. - Exchange their writings for peer correction. - Correct their work. Suggested answers: 1. It can help us visit shops, offices and places of scenic beauty, pay bills, read newspapers and magazines, send and receive emails, learn foreign languages and so on. 2. The team that cannot give the use of computer or repeat the use which has been given will lose the game. B4. Consolidation: - Summarize the main points of the lesson. (If there’s enough time, T puts some questions about the content of the lesson) B5. Homework: - Suggest Sts’ homework - Form groups and do the task. 3-4’ - Listen to the T. (Answer the T’s questions) 1-2’ - Listen and note down: + Learn the new words and phrases to talk about uses of the computer. + Make a list of things that a computer can do to help us in our daily life and decide which one may bring bad effects to its users. + Prepare Speaking Lesson.
