It exam ines all com m on English prepositions, as well as less com m on ones. It is inten d ed for interm ediate-level stu d en ts w ho already have som e know led g e of E nglish prepositions, b u t w ho have difficulty in using them correctly. The language level assum ed th ro u g h o u t is m id-inter­ m ediate (pre-C am bridge First Certificate), b u t the book can also be used successfully by stu d en ts w ith a h ig h er language level. j Many stu d en ts of' E nglish m ake the m istake of trying to translate English prepositions into their ow n language. This is never successful because m ost prepositions express m ore th an one idea, and w hile one m eaning of the preposition m ay translate, th e o th ers often d o not. For exam ple, the preposition for can express the concepts of d u ratio n , exchange, benefit and suitability (am ong others), each concept rem aining separate. W o rk in g w ith E n g lish P rep o sitio n s treats prepositions as expressions of concept, not as purely gram m atical forms. A nother difficulty often en co u ntered by stu d en ts is that prepositions are usually practised in m eaningless contexts. W o rk in g w ith E n g lish P rep o sitio n s uses a variety of exercises, b o th traditional and innovative, to contextualise the various uses of each preposition. O ne of the difficulties of p ro d u cin g a referen ce/p ractice book on prepositions is having to decide exactly at w hich p o in t a preposition ceases to be just a preposition and becom es p a rt of a verb com bination, or even a phrasal verb. This book concentrates on p rep o sitio n s only, b u t inevitably som e 'verb + preposition' com binations, an d som e phrasal verbs have been included. C om ­ pound prepositional p h rases (e.g. apart from, in addition to) have been included because, in most cases, they function solely as prepositions. W orking w ith E n g lish P re p o sitio n s can be used an d practised alongside others sim ilar to them in concept, or general concepts can be dealt w ith as a whole. There is no system atic p rogression th ro u g h the book, b u t it is advisable to study the w hole of any concept before going on to another, as the prepositions often overlap and are repeated w ith in concepts, thereby consolidating w h a t the students have learnt. W orking w ith E n g lish P re p o sitio n s can be used in the classroom or for self-study at hom e. For this reason there is a key w ith the answ ers to all of the closed exercises.
