II. III. IV. OUTLINE INTRODUCTION AIM OF RESEARCH LITERATURE REVIEW METHODOLOGY RESULTS DISCUSSION CONCLUSION INTRODUCTION (1) The object of this study is to address students’ weaknesses in peer interaction and communication in the high school English class. Most teachers state that students in Vietnam show weaknesses in the following areas: They are very weak at answering comprehension questions using their own wording as evidenced in their inability to use paraphrases to answer and support their answers. Students give either one-word answer or simply copy exact words from text. They do not respond appropriately or take turns properly and often come to get stuck. (2) Given this reality, there is a need to develop strategies in thinking aloud logically, first to encourage them to engage in thinking critically while reading and then to help them to put meaning into words as well as to get other students involved in interaction and discussion.Through interaction and discussion, hopefully their communication skills will be improved. AIM OF RESEARCH RESEARCH QUESTION : Does thinking aloud in reading lessons enhance students’ performance in discussion involvement? LITERATURE REVIEW (1) Tinzmann et al. (1990) studied the collaborative classroom. It was found that as 6 students think out loud after teacher’s modeling and then with one another while reading a story extract or part of an article, they gradually ‘internalize’ this dialog; it becomes their ‘inner speech’ competence, which directs their own logical thinking or problem solving processes, improve their language expression and correspondingly maximize their peer interaction in the classroom. (2) Gunning (1996) observed teachers modeling the way they thought aloud about the content of a reading text and examined students thinking aloud accordingly in the reading class. He concluded that think-alouds can make excellent models of comprehension processes such as making predictions, creating images, relating information with prior knowledge and experiences, monitoring comprehension, and getting over difficulty with word recognition as well as expression in one’s native language and the target language they are learning. V. (3) National Council of American Teachers (2000) concluded that by listening in as students think aloud, teachers can diagnose students' strengths and weakness. Techniques such as listening to think-aloud models, taking turns in discussing a piece of information, interviewing with one another and writing interactive journals help students to learn through the process of articulating their ideas and engaging in discussion. DEFINITIONS Thinking aloud in reading is described as saying aloud how you understand a text and whatever you think of related to the text. When asked to answer a question, the student may think aloud on a related part of the text to justify their answer. He can do so while partaking in a text-based discussion in class. The student is not expected to discuss things using the original words from the text. Rather he are supposed to paraphrase naturally, expressing himself in his own way. Inner speech is an ever-forming process of your own speech. When you hear someone describe something, you record it in your mind and internalize it. Later you may say the same thing in the same situation, first to yourself when you are alone and then to others when conversing with other people. Now inner speech has been externalized and it has a social function of communication. The collaborative class is where students are engaged in a thinking curriculum, everyone learns from everyone else, and no student is deprived of this opportunity for making contributions and appreciating the contributions of others. Thus, shared knowledge and authority, mediated learning, and heterogeneous 7 VI. groups of students are essential characteristics of collaborative classrooms and discussion involvement. (Tinzmann et al.,1990) Methodology / Participants Two classes of participants of comparable but mixed ability > Control class of Grade 10 / 40 students reading without thinking aloud > Experimental class of Grade 10 / 40 students going with think-alouds Two teachers at the same school (with at least 5 years of teaching similar levels) teach the control and experimental classes > Seven reading classes in Term One > I taught the first 4 lessons in both control and experimental classes > The other two teachers did the rest, one with the control class and the other with the experimental class. > We did the cross observations Methodology / Data Sources 14 Class observations ( 7 for control / 7 for experiment ) 8 Recordings of student performance ( Recordings of the last 4 control classes) (Recordings of the last 4 experimental classes) One final test for each class (Reading aloud and answering questions orally) Methodology / instructional context Term 1 Duration 7 reading texts / 14 weeks Activity Interaction & Discussion as Pair work / Group work / Class presentation Topic Daily life / School Talk / Mass media / Entertainment / Personal background Methodology / Learning Cycle : 5 E 8 Teaching steps: 1. ENGAGE : Task setting 2. EXPLORE <> 3. EXPLAIN : Modeling (Outlining & useful expressions) 4. EXPLORE <> ELABORATE : Task performing 5. EVALUATE : Presenting or reporting >> ANOTHER CYCLE OF FIVE E’S Methodology / Interaction Mode & Turn-taking Pair/Group work >> Class presentation Methodology / Teaching steps: Task setting : >> Teacher engages students and assigns the task Modeling : >> Teacher or lead student explores, explains and elaborates for modeling Task performing >> Students think aloud in pairs or groups following the model Presenting or reporting >> Group representatives present their answers to class with teacher’s support & evaluation. Methodology / Instructional interaction Before reading : Anticipating and leading in with snapshots: pictures, news items, perspectives, real objects, statistics, … What do you see in the picture? What do you learn from the news? Do you agree with people’s perspectives? Tell me whatever comes to your mind. Make it simple and speak it out. While reading : Thinking aloud along with reading aloud, skimming, scanning, word guessing & transferring information An anecdote, main ideas, important details, contextual meaning, categorizing … How do you know? How can you tell? What part of the text tells you that? How do you feel about that? Great, isn’t it? What do you think should be done? 9 After reading: Summarizing and concluding Your impressions? Predictions? What would you do in the same situation? Would you do the same as the characters? Tell the story from another perspective. Language functions: Describing: Who, What, Where, When, How Visualizing: Read the story and imagine the situation. Then retell it in your own words Speculating: Think of a scenario. What will happen as a result? Hypothesizing: What would you do / have done? Explaining: Why is that? How can you tell? Recounting: What do you remember about the story? Inferring: What can be inferred about it? Personalizing: Do you agree ? How do you like it there? VII. RESULTS / DATA FINDINGS Reading Classes Pre- interference fluent students Post- interference fluent students Control 7/40 10/40 Experiment 6/40 19/40 Control class: The number of fluent students increased slightly after 7 reading lessons in 14 weeks from 7 to 10, proving that 3 more out of 40 students benefited from the usual reading lessons. Experimental class: There was a significant increase in the number of fluent students after 14 weeks’ interference with thinking aloud model from 6 to 19. RESULTS / DATA ANALYSIS Fluency Indexes Breakdown Analysis Confidence Keenness & Initiative 10 Performance Expression & Elaboration Interaction Turn taking & Real Responding Fluency is defined as the ability to speak with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. All these components of fluency are expressed in the confidence, performance and interaction among students in class. All those students recognized to be fluent in this study proved to progress in their initiative and keenness to speak (Confidence), their proper language expression and elaboration ( Performance) and their appropriate responses and turn-taking. All class observations and recordings show that whereas only already fluent students ( 9/40) in the control class really took their initiatives, almost all students in the experimental class(32/40) got actively involved and they outperformed the control students in that they did not hesitate to speak their mind and that they started to expand to support themselves using lots of their own words. Although their expression was far from perfect, much more fluency was observed in their interaction and discussion. Students in the experimental class also outdid the the control class in the final test of term one. Analysis of individual answer sheets showed that most students in the experimental class used much of their own wording in answering even close-ended questions ( questions with short answers or which can be easily answered with the exact words from text ) For open-ended questions, they could even elaborate and expand their answers properly. VIII. DISCUSSION / IMPACTS Self satisfaction and sense of fulfillment are recorded so high in the experimental students. They feel more confident and show great interest to read and get involved in discussion They say they have made progress. DISCUSSION / LIMITATIONS Results may not apply to classes with over one half students at too low levels Results may also not apply to those students and teachers with exam-oriented motivation It requires habit formation and testing and assessment should be appropriate 11 IX. X. XI. CONCLUSIONS A practicable approach to getting students involved and giving them a free reign of expressing their own language and so giving them much ownership of their learning. Part of the whole – Part of an integrated and collaborative class. APPLICATIONS Applicable to reading and writing lessons with specific differences Specifically, applicable to classes of integrated skills and content.
