Ex:
Basketball was invented in 1891 by a physical education instructor in Springfield, Massachusetts, by
the name of James Naismith. Because of terrible weather in winter, his physical education students
were indoors rather than outdoors. They really did not like the idea of boring, repetitive exercises
and preferred the excitement and challenge of a game. Naismith figured out a team sport that could
be played indoors on a gymnasium floor, that involved a lot running, that kept all team members
involved, and that did not allow the tackling and physical contact of American style football.
What is the topic of the passage?
A. The life of James Naismith
B. This history of sports
C. Physical education and exercise
D. The origin of basketball

once roamed the jungles in vast number, now only about 2,300 and by the year 2025, their
population is estimated to be down to zero. What is alarming about the case of the Bengal tiger is
that this extinction will have been caused almost entirely by poachers who according to some
sources, are not interested in material gain but in personal gratification.
This is an example of the callousness that is part of what is causing the problem of extinction.
Animals like Bengal tigers as well as other endangered species are a valuable part of the world’s
ecosystem. International laws protecting these animals must be enacted to ensure their survival and
the survival of our planet.
Countries around the world have begun to deal with the problem in various ways. Some countries, in
order to circumvent the problem, have allocated large amounts of land to animal reserves. They then
charge admission to help defray the costs of maintaining the parks and they often must also depend
on world organizations for support. With the money they get, they can invest in equipment, and
patrols to protect the animals. Another solution that is an attempt to stem the tide of animal
extinction is an international boycott of products made from endangered species. This seems fairly
effective but it will not, by itself, prevent animals from being hunted and killed.

Những từ đầu mối trả lời cho các câu hỏi Who, what, when, why, how
+ Tính từ số lượng (best, most, worst,...)
+ Những dấu hiệu đánh máy: in nghiêng, in đậm, gạch chân

Ex: The hardest woodwind instrument to learn is the oboe.
The oboe is the most difficult woodwind instrument to master.
a/ Sử dụng từ đồng nghĩa:
- a car exhibition -> an auto show
- to identify problems in the system -> to expose defects in the system
- vehicular access will be temporarily restricted -> some roads will be closed for a certain period of
time.
b/ Sử dụng từ trái nghĩa:
The construction will improve the traffic flow.
-> The construction will ease traffic congestion.
The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday.
-> The museum is closed to the public on Monday.
- to encourage better attendance -> to have fewer absences
She is eating an apple -> She is eating a fruit.
He bought a microwave oven -> He purchased a kitchen appliance
transportation service -> bus, subway, train and airline service
fossil fuels -> coal, oil, gas...
e/ Thay đổi từ loại:
- to take occasional walks -> to walk occasionally
- to dress comfortably walks -> to wear comfortable clothing
f/ Sử dụng các cấu trúc khác:
- Street parking is available, but limited
-> Visitors may have difficulty finding a place to park.
- Competitive salary based on the level of prior experience
-> Pay depends on how much experience the applicant has.

to succeed in the music business; nine out to ten bands that release a first record fail
to produce a second. Surviving in the music industry requires luck and patience, but most of all it
requires an intricate knowledge of how a record company functions. The process begins when a
representative of a company's Artists and Repertoire (A & R) department visits bars and night clubs,
scouting for young, talented bands. After the representative identifies a promising band, he or she will
work to negotiate a contract with that band. The signing of this recording contract is a slow process. A
company will spend a long time investigating the band itself as well as current trends in popular music.
During this period, it is important that a band reciprocate with an investigation of its own, learning as
much as possible about the record company and making personal connections within the different
departments that will handle their recordings.
Once a band has signed the contract and has finished recording an album, the Publicity and Promotions
department takes over. This department decides whether or not to mass produce and market the band's
album. Most bands fail to make personal contacts in this second department, thus losing their voice in
the important final process of producing and marketing their album. This loss of voice often
contributes to the band's failure as a recording group.
Which of the following statements best expresses the main idea of the passage?
A. Nine out of ten bands fail to produce a second record.
B. It is important for a band to have an intricate knowledge of how a recording company
works.
C. Making personal connections will help the band in the final decisions about the promotion
of their album.
D. The main factors in a band's success are luck and patience.
Exercise 2.
Botany, the study of plants, occupies a peculiar position in the history of human knowledge. For many
thousands of years it was the one field of awareness about which humans had anything more than the
vaguest of insights. It is impossible to know today just what our Stone Age ancestors knew about
plants, but from what we can observe of pre-industrial societies that still exist; a detailed learning of
plants and their properties must be extremely ancient. This is logical. Plants are the basis of the food
pyramid for all living things, even for other plants. They have always been enormously important to
the welfare of people, not only for food, but also for clothing, weapons, tools, dyes, medicines, shelter,
and a great many other purposes. Tribes living today in the jungles of the Amazon recognize literally
hundreds of plants and know many properties of each. To them botany, as such, has no name and is
probably not even recognized as a special branch of ‘knowledge’ at all.

Unfortunately, the more industrialized we become the farther away we move from direct contact with
plants, and the less distinct our knowledge of botany grows. Yet everyone comes unconsciously on an
amazing amount of botanical knowledge, and few people will fail to recognize a rose, an apple, or an
orchid. When our Neolithic ancestors, living in the Middle East about 10,000 years ago, discovered
that certain grasses could be harvested and their seeds planted for richer yields the next season, the first
great step in a new association of plants and humans was taken. Grains were discovered and from them
flowed the marvel of agriculture: cultivated crops. From then on, humans would increasingly take their
living from the controlled production of a few plants, rather than getting a little here and a little there
from many varieties that grew wild - and the accumulate knowledge of tens of thousands of years of
experience and intimacy with plants in the wild would begin to fade away.
Which of the following assumptions about early humans is expressed in the passage?
A. They probably had extensive knowledge of plants.
B. They divided knowledge into well-defined fields.
C. They did not enjoy the study of botany.
D. They placed great importance on ownership of property.
Exercise 3.
For many years, scientists have speculated that the cataclysmic impact of ail asteroid with the earth
was responsible for the demise of the dinosaurs approximately 65 million years ago. Previous
discoveries and results have hinted that an asteroid two kilometers in diameter struck the Yucatan
peninsula in Eastern Mexico. This impact, stronger than one thousand nuclear explosions, is speculated
to have cast a cloud of dust and debris into the atmosphere, covering the entire surface temperature of
the earth and blocking out the sun and consequently lowering the surface temperature of the earth.
With such a radical change in the earth’s environment, scientists believe that over 99% of all animal
and plant species were eradicated. Only after millions of years did plants and animals even begin to
recover. But, the reign of the dinosaurs had ended and the age of mammals had begun.
The crucial link that has his theory together has been the element iridium. Iridium is not commonly
found on either the surface of the earth or inside the crust. It is more commonly found in asteroids or
meteorites throughout the solar system. Scientists have hypothesized that after the asteroid impacted
the earth, an even layer of iridium sediment settled over the globe and eventually became part of its
surface. The theory, of course, has depended on the discovery of such an existing layer of iridium.
Unfortunately, scientists have never been able to offer absolute proof that this asteroid impact ever
occurred. Recently, however, a discovery may go a long way toward validating these scientists’
theories. In 1996, a team of marine biologists excavated samples of rock from the floor of the Atlantic
Ocean just off the coast of Bermuda. Found thousands of meters below the sea, these samples contain
iridium similar to those found in the Yucatan peninsula thousands kilometers away. At first, scientists
were skeptical whether the samples were from the same time period. But since carbon dating placed
them to 65 million years ago, their doubts were quickly alleviated. Since then many of the other
theories for the demise of the dinosaur have been finally laid to rest.
This passage mainly discusses a theory about
A. which type of dinosaur roamed where
B. archeological evidence from Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean
C. why the dinosaurs turned into birds and reptiles
D. the extinction of the dinosaurs

Exxercise 4.
Large animals that inhabit the desert have evolved a number of adaptations for reducing the effects of
extreme heat. One adaptation is to be light in color, and to reflect rather than absorb the Sun’s rays
.Desert mammals also depart from the normal mammalian practice of maintaining a constant body
temperature. Instead of trying to keep down the body temperatures deep inside the body, which would
involve the expenditure of water and energy, desert mammals allow their temperatures to rise to what
would normally be fever height, and temperatures as high as 46 degrees Celsius have been measured in
Grant’s gazelles. The overheated body then cools down during the cold desert night, and indeed the
temperature may fall unusually low by dawn, as low as 34 degrees Celsius in the camel. This is an
advantage since the heat of the first few hours of daylight is absorbed in warming up the body, and an
excessive buildup of heat does not begin until well into the day.
Another strategy of large desert animals is to tolerate the loss of body water to a point that would be
fatal for non-adapted animals. The camel can lose up to 30 percent of its body weight as water without
harm to itself, whereas human beings die after losing only 12 to 13 percent of their body weight. An
equally important adaptation is the ability to replenish this water loss at one drink. Desert animals can
drink prodigious volumes in a short time, and camels have been known to imbibe over 100 liters in a
few minutes. A very dehydrated person, on the other hand, cannot drink enough water to dehydrate at
one session, because the human stomach is not sufficiently big and because a too rapid dilution of the
body fluids causes death from water intoxication. The tolerance of water loss is of obvious advantage
in the desert, as animals do not have to remain near a water hole but can obtain food from grazing
sparse and far-flung pastures. Desert-adapted mammals have the further ability to feed normally when
extremely dehydrated; it is a common experience in people that appetite is lost even under conditions
of moderate thirst.
What is the main topic of the passage?
A. Weather variations in the desert
B. Adaptations of desert animals
C. Diseases of desert animals
D. Human use of desert animals
Exercise 5.
In Death Valley, California, one of the hottest, most arid places in North America, there is much salt,
and salt can damage rocks impressively. Inhabitants of areas elsewhere, where streets and highways
are salted to control ice, are familiar with the resulting rust and deterioration on cars. That attests to the
chemically corrosive nature of salt, but it is not the way salt destroys rocks. Salt breaks rocks apart
principally by a process called crystal prying and wedging. This happens not by soaking the rocks is
salt water, but by moistening their bottoms with salt water. Such conditions exist in many areas along
the eastern edge of central Death Valley. There, salty water rises from the groundwater table by
capillary action through tiny spaces in sediment until it reaches the surface.
Most stones have capillary passages that suck salt water from the wet ground. Death Valley provides
an ultra-dry atmosphere and high daily temperatures, which promote evaporation and the formation of
salt crystals along the cracks or other openings within stones. These crystals grow as long as salt water
is available. Like tree roots breaking up a sidewalk, the growing crystals exert pressure on the rock and
eventually pry the rocks apart along planes of weakness, such s banding in metamorphic rocks,
bedding in sedimentary rocks, or preexisting or incipient fractions, and along boundaries between
individual mineral crystals or grains. Besides crystals growth, the expansion of halite crystals (the

same as everyday table salt) by heating and of sulfates and similar salts by hydration can contribute
additional stresses. A rock durable enough to have withstood natural conditions for a very long time in
other areas could probably be shattered into small pieces by salt weathering within a few generations.
The dominant salt in Death Valley is halite, or sodium chloride, but other salts, mostly carbonates and
sulfates, also cause prying and wedging, as does ordinary ice. Weathering by a variety of salts, though
often subtle, is a worldwide phenomenon. Not restricted to arid regions, intense salt weathering occurs
mostly in salt-rich places like the seashore, near the large saline lakes in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica,
and in desert sections of Australia, New Zealand, and central Asia.
What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The destructive effects of salt on rocks.
B. The impressive salt rocks in Death Valley.
C. The amount of salt produced in Death Valley.
D. The damaging effects of salt on roads and highways.

Example 1:
The words ‘’capital’’ and ‘’capitol’’ are confused in spelling and in meaning by a lot of people who
try to use them. Both their spellings and their meanings are quite closely related. A ‘’capital’’ is the
location of the center of government, while a ‘’capitol’’ is the actual building where the government
officials meet. Thus, in the United States, for example, the Capitol building is located in Washington,
D.C, which is the capital city of the United States.
Where in the passage does the author define the word ‘’capital’’
A. Line 1
B. Line 2-3
C. Line 4
D. Line 5
Example 2:
Since the world has become industrialized, there has been an increase in the number of animal
species that have either become extinct or have neared extinction. Bengal tiger, for instance, which
once roamed the jungles in vast number, now only about 2,300 and by the year 2025, their
population is estimated to be down to zero. What is alarming about the case of the Bengal tiger is
that this extinction will have been caused almost entirely by poachers who according to some
sources, are not interested in material gain but in personal gratification. This is an example of the
callousness that is part of what is causing the problem of extinction. Animals like Bengal tigers as
well as other endangered species are a valuable part of the world's ecosystem. International laws
protecting these animals must be enacted to ensure their survival and the survival of our planet.
Where in the passage does the author discuss a cause of extinction?
A. Lines 7-9
B. Lines 5-6
C. Lines 10-16
D. Lines 1-3

park movement began in the United Sates in 1870 when a team of explorers
suggested that part of the Yellowstone River region be set aside in order to protect its geothermal
features, wildlife, forests, and exceptional scenery for the benefit of future generations. Congress
responded by creating Yellowstone National Park, the world’s first, in 1872.
The idea proved popular, and the number of national parks in this country grew rapidly, new
parks being set up by presidential proclamation and sometimes as the result of gifts by states of the
union or by individuals. Administration of this increasingly complex system was in the hands of the
U.S. Army for thirty years from 1886, but then Congress created the National Park Service as part of
the Department of the Interior to oversee it.
Today, in addition to what might be thought of as typical national parks, the Service also manages
places of historic interest, hiking trails, seashores, rivers, reserves of scientific interest, and memorials. In
all, more than 300 entities are involved, covering over 32 million hectares. Each unit is directed by a
superintendent who is responsible for all aspects of the operation. Staff include administrative personnel
and, according to the nature of the unit, park rangers, naturalists, historians, and maintenance workers.
Perhaps unexpectedly, the Statue of Liberty and the White House both fall within the system. It
is sites such as these which help account for the extraordinary number of visitors, now totaling some
400 million annually. To serve such large numbers, guest facilities are offered at every site, which may
include hotels, restaurants, gas stations, and transportation systems. All these
are operated by private concessionaires, who must observe specific regulations imposed by the Federal
Government.

Exercise 2. Read the text and choose the best answer.
MICKEY MOUSE
Mickey Mouse was not Walt Disney’s first successful cartoon creation, but he is certainly his
famous one. It was on a cross-country train trip from New York to California in 1927 that Disney first
drew the mouse with the big ears. Supposedly, he took his inspiration from the tame field mice that
used to scamper into his old studio in Kansas City. No one is quite sure why he dressed the mouse in
the now-familiar shorts with two buttons and gave him the yellow shoes. But we do know that Disney
had intended to call him Mortimer until his wife Lillian intervened and christened him Mickey Mouse.
Capitalizing on the interest in Charles Lindsborg, Disney planned Mickey’s debut in the short
cartoon Plane Crazy, with Minnie as a co-star. In the third short cartoon, Steamboat Willie, Mickey
was whistling and singing through the miracle of the modern soundtrack. By the 1930s Mickey’s
image had circled the globe. He was a superstar at the height of his career.
Although he has received a few minor changes throughout his lifetime, most notably the addition
of white gloves and the alterations to achieve the rounder forms of a more childish body, he has
remained true to his nature since those first cartoons. Mickey is appealing because he is nice. He may
get into trouble, but he takes it on the chin with a grin. He is both good-natured and resourceful.
Perhaps that was Disney’s own image of himself. Why else would he have insisted on doing Mickey’s
voice in all the cartoons for twenty years? When interviewed, he would say: “There is a lot of the
mouse in me.” And that mouse has remained one of the most pervasive images in American popular
culture.

Exercise 3.
In the folklore of the Navajo people, it was said that frogs and toads fell from the sky when it
rained. The phenomenon that gave rise to this belief involved the spadefoot toad, which remains
dormant beneath the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, avoiding the heat and drought for as long as eight or
nine months. With the onset of summer thunderstorms, however, the toads respond to the vibrations of
drumming raindrops and emerge, as if fallen from the sky with the rain, to begin their brief and frantic
mating season.
The male spadefoot sits in a muddy pool and fills the night with his calls, attempting to attract a
female of the same species. Once a female joins him, she may lay as many as 1,000 eggs in the small
pool of life-sustaining rainwater. From that point it's a race against the elements for the young, who
must hatch and mature with remarkable speed before the pool evaporates beneath the searing desert
sun. As the pool grows smaller and smaller, it becomes thick with tadpoles fighting for survival in the
mud, threatened not only by the loss of their watery nest but also by devouring insects and animals. In
as few as nine days after fertilization of the eggs, those lucky enough to survive develop through each
tadpole stage and finally emerge as fully formed toads. After gorging themselves on insects, the young
toads, like their parents, burrow underground, where they will lie dormant abating the next summer's
storms.
