It tells the story of an attack on the Earth by aliens from Mars, and it stars Tom Cruise. But the story The War of the Worlds is much older than the Tom Cruise film. • The British writer H.G. Wells wrote The War of the Worlds in 1898. It was one of the first science fiction books. In the story, the aliens attacked Britain. They destroyed a lot of British cities, including London. • Four decades later, an American actor and director called Orson Welles used HG Wells’ story for a radio play. The start of the play was like an ordinary radio music programme, but the end was like a news report. In the play, reporters described a terrible attack by aliens. Only one reporter survived. At the end of the play, he was alone on the top of a building. Many listeners panicked because they thought that the play was a real news report. They grabbed clothes and money and ran into the streets. They wanted to escape the aliens. In 1952, Hollywood made the first film called The War of the Worlds. In this film, aliens attacked California. There was also a musical version of The War of the Worlds. Jeff Wayne, an American from New York, wrote the music for a double album in 1978. It tells the story in words and music. You can still buy the album on CD today. • • ➒ ➓ Read the text and answer the questions. 1 What kind of book was The War of the Worlds? When he went to the fridge to get the milk, he noticed an old woman. She was walking slowly and pushing a heavy trolley. The trolley was full of shopping. She smiled at Bill as she went past, and Bill smiled at her. Then he went to find the eggs. When Bill turned the corner, he saw the same woman again. She was trying to get a packet of soap off a shelf, but she couldn’t reach it. ‘Can I help you?’ asked Bill. ‘Yes, please,’ said the woman. ‘I want one of those packets of soap on the top shelf, but the shelf is too high for me. Could you get it for me, please?’ Bill isn’t very tall, but he reached up and managed to get the packet of soap for her. Then they walked together towards the checkout. Bill pushed the woman’s trolley for her, and she walked beside him. At the check-out, they stood and talked together like old friends. ‘I’ve bought plenty of food today and I’ve got some lovely presents for the family, too,’ the woman said. ‘I’m so pleased that you could help me.’ Bill smiled as she left the shop with three big bags of shopping. Bill didn’t smile when he gave his eggs and milk to the girl at the check-out. She told him to pay £94! ‘There’s been a mistake!’ he said, and he pointed at his two things. ‘Oh, no,’ said the girl. ‘The lady hasn’t paid for her shopping. You’re going to pay. That’s what she said. As a result, the bears are hungry. They have started to come into towns to look for food. Some polar bears have even entered houses! People in Arctic towns must be very careful because bears can attack and kill humans. In the small, isolated Canadian town of Churchill, parents are now taking their children to school to give them protection from attacks by bears. Polar bears are very big and very fierce, but they're also very beautiful creatures. Protecting the polar bears’ Arctic habitat is important for bears and people. 4 In spring it’s now … a easier for bears to hunt seals. b harder for bears to hunt seals. c impossible to find any seals. VOCABULARY Seals are polar bears’ main food. Polar bears are endangered because it’s becoming more difficult for them to catch the seals. The bears wait on the frozen Arctic Ocean and catch the seals when they come up through holes in the ice. They can only reach the seals when the sea is frozen, but the world’s weather is changing. World temperatures are getting higher, and the sea ice in the Arctic is getting thinner. In summer, the bears can’t walk over the ice, and so they can’t catch seals. Spring ice is also getting thinner, so it’s becoming harder to catch seals in spring, too. / 12 TOTAL GRAMMAR / 40 Complete the sentences with words from the text. 1 P are animals that kill and eat other animals. 2 My grandparents’ house is very i , so they have no near neighbours. 3 Sunglasses give us p for our eyes in summer. 4 Don’t go near that dog. Would you tell your friends? Some lottery winners don’t want the newspapers to know their names, but they usually share the news with their families and friends. But one winner hasn’t told anyone. We interviewed her last week. We can’t tell readers the woman’s real name, so we've called her ‘Nicola’. Nicola has got a fortune in the bank, but no one knows about it. She won £2 million in the lottery three months ago, but she didn’t want the money to change her life, so she didn’t tell anyone: not even her husband! Nicola didn’t want to tell him because she didn’t want him to leave his job. Nicola’s husband didn’t use to work. He stayed at home for nearly four years and watched TV all day! Eventually he found a job, and now he’s a much nicer and happier person. ‘That’s why I decided not to tell him about the money,’ Nicola said. ‘I was afraid it would change our lives. He would have used the lottery money as an opportunity to stop work again. I don’t want him to be lazy and unhappy again. I didn’t want to ruin the life that we’ve got now.’ So how does Nicola keep her secret? Nicola still has a job, but now she doesn’t go to work every day. She tells her husband that she's doing more of her work at home. The family go out together a lot more and they've got new clothes. She pretends that she's managed to save the money for these things. ‘Are you happy?’ we asked her. ‘Yes,’ Nicola answered. 'I don’t have to worry about money now, and that’s nice. But nothing else has changed. Sometimes I buy things secretly, but I don’t spend a lot of money. We don’t need glamorous clothes and expensive holidays.’ ➒ ➓ Read the text.
