Hoặc là, học sinh sẽ nói ‘I go to school on foot every day’, thay vì nói ‘I go to school by foot every day’. → Let your name be writen here. Góp ý của giáo viên Câu mệnh lệnh: (Don’t) + V + object Subject + is(n’t) to/are(n’t) to/must(n’t) + be + PP. Ex: - Write your name here. → Your name must be written here. - Don’t touch this switch. → This switch isn’t to be/mustn’t be touched. (Theo ‘A Practical English Grammar – A. J. Thomson & A. V. Martinet’) Trình bày ví dụ chưa đầy đủ. Cần bổ + Verb + that clause: đây là dạng câu sung thêm. Tham khảo thêm sách có bị động 2 mệnh đề. Ex: People say that he is a good doctor. trong thư viện trường: ‘A Practical 3 It is said that he is a good doctor. He is said to be a good doctor. - Chủ đề Relative clauses Những trường hợp ko dùng THAT: - Chủ đề Reported speech S + said/ told + O/ said to + O + (that) + S + V lùi thì. - Chủ đề Inversion Inverted conditional sentences without if. This makes the sentence more formal and the event less lively. + Type 1: If + S + V1, S + V1/ will + bare_ing. → Should + S + bare_ing, S + V1/ will + bare_ing. Ex: Should Tom call me, tell him I’m away on a business. + Type 2: If + S + past subjunctive, S + would + bare_ing.(*) → Were + S + to_ing , S + would + bare_ing. Ex: Were I to have enough money, I would buy a car. - Chủ đề Tenses English Grammar – A. J. Thomson & A. V. Martinet. Ví dụ: People believed that he was = It was believed that he was or He was believed to be . . . People know that he was = It is known that he was or He is known to have been . . . People believe that he was waiting for a message. = He is believed to have been waiting for a message. AND LEARNING AUTONOMY IN LEARNING GRAMMAR I. Reason why to choose the topic Grammar is the structural foundation of our ability to express ourselves. The more students are aware of how grammar works, the more they can apply grammar to express their ideas, monitor the meaning and effectiveness of the way they and others use the language, resulting in making communication better. Grammar is, therefore, considered to be one of the most challenging aspects to deal with because students are supposed not only to know the rules of language, but also know when, why, and how to apply them effectively in their study and in daily communication. Whatever difficulties they encounter, however, they can overcome them all if teachers succeed in stimulating their responsibility and learning autonomy. II. Rationale 1. Developing students’ responsibility Teachers should try to develop students’ responsibility for their own learning because it is their responsibility that results in their making efforts in learning. There is no denying that teachers can provide all the necessary circumstances and input, but learning can only happen if students are willing to contribute. Furthermore, success in learning very much depends on students having a responsible attitude. In fact, responsible students, when doing homework or answering questions in class, are not aspiring to please the teacher, or to get a good mark, but simply making an effort in order to learn something and get some knowledge as well. Responsible students are, besides, willing to cooperate with the teacher and others in the learning group for everyone’s benefit. 2. Developing students’ learning autonomy No matter how much students learn through lessons or how much input teachers give them, there is always plenty more they will need to learn by practice, on their own. Besides, students’ changing needs will require them to go back to learning several times in their lives, which means their having to be able to study on their own. 3. Stimulating students’ motivation and self-confidence Teachers’ developing students’ responsibilty and learning autonomy is hardly achieved if teachers fail to stimulate their motivation and self-confidence as motivation is indeed a prerequisite for learning and responsibility development alike. Motivated students are more able to identify the goals of learning, which makes them more willing to take responsibility for the outcome. 7 Apart from reinforcing motivation, self-confidence contributes to the development of responsibility in its own right. Students must believe that they are capable of managing their own learning and that they can rely on themselves, not only the teacher. 4. Raising students’ awareness of the importance of grammar Students often think that learning grammar is to learn its rules and then do exercises followed. The knowledge of grammar is, however, quite useful in learning the four English skills, e.g. listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In communication as well as in doing listening tasks, for example, students may guess that the speaker is going to express an opposite idea if understanding when and why to use the conjunction ‘but’. In speaking, students say ‘I go to school on foot every day’, instead of saying ‘I to go to school by foot every day’. When doing reading comprehension tasks, students will be able to analyse sentences in order to understand the passage better, which in turn helps make it easier for them to do the tasks if they understand and recognize the grammar being used with their vocabulary. Being able to recognize grammar helps them guess the sentence meaning, making it easier to answer to question or choose the best answer even with their limited vocabulary. Grammar is, furthermore, very important to master because it helps students know how to combine words or bits of words in order to form longer units of meaning. III. Procedures 1. Giving students assignments to do in groups Giving students assignments to do in groups may help to reduce their depending too much on the teacher, strengthen their cooperation and solidarity, enable them to understand a particular grammar item more deeply, and raise their self-confidence in their ability to find out the new knowledge themselves. There are three steps in giving students assignments as follows: Step 1: dividing students into groups In order to help students do their assignments effectively, the teacher should ask them to recommend a group leader and guide them how to work together to have the best result. Step 2: giving assignments and guiding The teacher needs to give them requirements in details and guide them how to fulfil the assignment. The teacher ought to introduce the books available in the school library or other materials and how to look for the information in the internet as well. To the topic of tenses, for example, the teacher asks the students to pay attention to formations, uses, and examples. The comparison of the similarities and differences between a pair of tenses is also taken into consideration. The teacher should remind the students to take spelling mistakes into account and format of a text as well. 8 Step 3: giving comments In order to help students feel more confident when making a presentation in front of the class and make teaching and learning process more effective, the teacher ought to give them comments on their assignments to make changes if necessary. Students can have a direct discussion with the teacher about what they have done or send it to the teacher’s email address. The teacher can give comments by using ‘insert’ and then choosing ‘comment’. This method helps stimulate the application of technology in teaching and learning and save the time of travelling as well. Some examples of the teacher’s giving comments to the students: Students’ writing - Passive voice + Imperative: (Don’t) + V + object → (not) + let + object + PP Ex: Write your name here. → Let your name be writen here. + Verb + that clause: đây là dạng câu bị động 2 mệnh đề. Ex: People say that he is a good doctor. It is said that he is a good doctor. He is said to be a good doctor. Teacher’s comments Imperative: (Don’t) + V + object Subject + is(n’t) to/are(n’t) to/must(n’t) + be + PP. Ex: - Write your name here. → Your name must be written here. - Don’t touch this switch. → This switch isn’t to be/mustn’t be touched. (‘A Practical English Grammar’ – A. J. Thomson & A. V. Martinet’) The examples are not satisfactory enough. So the teacher had the students read the book ‘A Practical English Grammar’ written by A. J. Thomson & A. V. Martinet available in the school library for further information. Ex: People believed that he was = It was believed that he was or He was believed to be . . . People know that he was = It is known that he was or He is known to have been . . . People believe that he was waiting for a message. = He is believed to have been waiting for a message. 9 - Relative clauses Những trường hợp ko dùng THAT: The teacher reminded the students not to use informal styles in formal styles. - Reported speech S + said/ told + O/ said to + O + (that) + S + V lùi thì. - Inversion Inverted conditional sentences without if. - Tenses The formation is not general enough. The cases in which the tenses of the verbs in direct speech are unchanged despite the fact that the verb in main clause is used in the simple past tense should be added as well. The verb used in the simple present should be used instead of V1. The spelling mistakes need to be corrected, e.g. bare_ing. In addition to the simple the present tense in the if-clause, some other tenses, e.g. the present continuous and the present perfect, can be used in the if-clause. The comparison of the similarities and differences between the present perfect and the present perfect continuous should be added. Giving comments not only makes students more confident but also makes sure the accuracy of the knowledge students are supposed to acquire. This is also the material the teacher and students use a reference later. 2. Managing the groups’ presentation Step 1: The group is required to deliver the handouts at least three days in advance so that their classmates know what they are going to discuss in the next class, which in turn makes it possible for them to make active contributions and state their ideas in the class. Step 2: The group is required to recommend who is in charge of making a presentation in front of the class, of making computer slides, of controlling the computer during the class time, and of having handouts copied and delivered. 10 Step 3: The teacher observes, takes notes the students’ ideas, and gives comments on both the handouts and the students’ ideas. The teacher should state the strengths as well as the limitations so that the other students know how to do their assignments better later. Step 4: The teacher has the group rewrite the handouts if necessary to make sure that the handouts can be used as a reference. IV. Results These above procedures were applied in class 10 specializing in English at Le Quy Don high school. Most of the students were motivated to fulfil all the teacher’s requirements and share their ideas in classes on account of their responsibility towards themselves and their groups, and their confidence to grasp the knowledge on their own. Their responsibility and learning autonomy not only enabled them to understand grammar better but also helped them apply grammar to doing the tests in which the English skills were tested, resulting in making their results higher and higher as follows, Tests in the second semester/Marks 8-10 6.5-7.9 5-6.4 Below 5 First test 6 17 11 0 Second test 12 16 6 0 Third test 24 10 0 0 Final 32 2 0 0 V. Conclusion Considering the classes and the students’ results, I realise that responsibility and learning autonomy are quite useful in their studying. I do believe that their responsibility towards themselves as well as others and learning autonomy enable them to review and study what they wish to on their own for the sake of their future. NGƯỜI VIẾT Huỳnh Thục Hạ Đoan 11 VI. Một số bài làm điển hình của học sinh A. TENSES Động từ trong tiếng anh được chia làm 3 thì chính : Quá khứ (Past) Hiện tại (Present) Tương lai (Future) Mỗi thì chính lại chia ra thành nhiều thì nhỏ để diễn đạt tính chính xác của hành động. 1. The simple present tense (Thì hiện tại đơn) 1.1 Form (Công thức) a. To be : (+) S + is/ am/ are … (-) S + is/ am/ are + NOT … (?) Is/ Am/ Are + S …? b) Động từ thường : (+) S + Vs/es / V (-) S + don’t / doesn’t + bare inf. (?) Do/Does + S + bare inf 1.2 Usage ( Cách dùng thì) Diễn tả một hành động thường xuyên xảy ra, một thói quen ở hiện tại. Thì này thường dùng với các trạng từ chỉ mức đô thường xuyên (always, usually, often, sometimes, never, rarely, etc.) hoặc các cụm trạng từ : in the morning, on Mondays, everyday, every morning, in the summer. (Tài liệu tham khảo: Giải thích ngữ pháp - Mai Lan Hương. English Grammar In Use - Raymond Murphy.) B. INVERSION The term ‘inversion’ covers two different grammatical operations: + Changing the normal position of verb and subject: Adverbs + main verb + subject… This occurs when adverbs of place, adverbs of direction or short adverbs such as here, there, first, last…appear at the beginning of the sentence. Ex: - Under the tree was lying the biggest man I had ever seen. - Here comes the bus. - On the grass sat an enormous frog. - Directly in front of them stood a great castle. - A long the road came a strange procession. - There comes Freddy. If subject is a pronoun like we, you, she, he, it, they…it is directly followed by the main verb. Ex: - Here she comes. - At the end of the road they were sitting. + Using a form like a question for the main verb: Auxiliary verbs/ be/ have +Subject + main verb… Inversion after negative adverbials. This is commonly used in formal language. Time expressions: never, rarely, seldom. These are most commonly used with present perfect, past perfect or with modal verbs such as: can and could. Ex: - Rarely can a minister have been face with such a problem. 19 - Seldom dose he go swimming. - Never (before) have I eaten this kind of food. Time expressions: hardly, scarcely, barely, no sooner. These refer to an event which quickly follows another in the past. They are commonly used with past perfect. Ex: - Hardly had the train left when there was an explosion. - Scarcely had I entered the room when the phone rang. - No sooner had I reached the door than I realized it was locked. - No sooner had the team been back on the pitch than it rained. Inversion after only. Here only combines with other time expression such as: only after, only when, only then, only with, only later… and is usually used with the past simple. Ex: - Only after posting the letter did I remember that I had forgotten to put on a stamp. - Only with the full agreement of everyone can we hope to succeed. Note that when ‘only’ refers to ‘state of being the only one’ there is no inversion following it. Ex: Only Mary realized that the door was not locked. Inversion with phrases containing no/ not. These include: under no circumstances, on no account, nowhere, at no time, in no way, on no addition, not until, not only…but also…, not until much later…or ‘no + object’. - On no condition should we tell anyone about it. - Not until I got home did I notice that I had a wrong umbrella. Inversion with ‘little’: ‘Little’ also has a negative or restrictive meaning in the sentence. Ex: Little does the government appreciate what the results will be. Inversion with ‘so/ such…that’: It only occurs if so/ such is the first word in the sentence. So is used with adjective when the main verb is be: So + adj + Inversion + that clause. Ex: So devastating was the force of the storm that trees died. Such is used with be means ‘so strong/ so great/ so much…’ Such + be + S (=N) + that clause Ex: Such was the force of the storm that trees died. Inversion after as/ than: This is more common in formal and written English: As + auxiliary verbs/ modal verbs/ be/ have… +S. 20
