You will inspect the part geometry and create the cutting tools needed for machining. You will also create geometry groups in preparation for machining. Step 1: Create a new setup for bowl_cavity-1. Click File→New. Select the Manufacturing tab. Select Inches from the Units list. Click General Setup from the Templates. Type ***_bowl_cavity-1_setup_1 in the Name box. Click Open in the Part to reference group. Select bowl_cavity-1 from the parts directory. Click OK. Click OK to create the assembly. Step 2: Review the geometry for size, depth, and shape. Step 3: Save the manufacturing assembly. Fixed Axis Techniques– Workbook 1-1 Machining preparation 1 Step 4: Optional: At this time you can create geometry for the Blank inside of Workpiece, or you will have to use the Auto Block option in the Workpiece. Step 5: Create cutting tools that will be used to cut the part. The part will be rough machined using a plunge milling operation. The tools can be created with holders that would be similar to holders on your machine tools. Create an end mill for this operation. Diameter — 2.00 Length — 6.00 Lower Radius — .0469 Flute Length — 2.0 Flutes — 3 The next tool will continue the roughing process using a Cavity Mill operation. Create an end mill with the following parameters; Diameter — 1.25 Lower Radius — .125 Length — 3.50 Create an end mill with the following parameters; Diameter — .750 Lower Radius — .250 Length — 3.50 1-2 Fixed Axis Techniques– Workbook NX6 MT11065 Machining preparation 1 The following tools will be used for semi-finishing and finishing using Fixed Contour operations. Create a ball mill with the following parameters; Diameter — .750 Length 3.50 Create an end mill with the following parameters; Diameter — .375 Lower Radius — .0605 Length 3.50 Step 6: Change the Operation Navigator to the Geometry view. Edit the MCS and locate per standards used in your shop. Edit the Workpiece and add Part and Blank geometry. You can use the Auto Blank or create a block in modeling to be used for the blank geometry. Step 7: Save the part. Fixed Axis Techniques– Workbook 1-3 1 Lesson 2 Plunge and Cavity Milling 2 In this section you will create Plunge and Cavity Milling operations to rough out the cavity. You will create a Plunge Milling operation to rough the cavity, then you will create a Cavity Mill operation to remove any large scallops left by the plunge milling operation. The process will continue with a smaller tool to remove more material. Step 1: Continue using the part ***_bowl_cavity-1_setup_1. Step 2: Create a Plunge Milling operation using the 2.00 diameter end mill that you created in the previous activity. Adjust the stepover to make a tool path that is acceptable to you. If your practice is to use inserted tools the stepover will need to take the size of the insert into consideration. Creating a 3D IPW may be helpful in subsequent operations. Fixed Axis Techniques– Workbook 2-1 Plunge and Cavity Milling Step 3: Create a Cavity Mill operation to continue the roughing process. You can use the 1.25 end mill that was previously created. Set the cut levels and other parameters to create an acceptable roughing path. Step 4: Create a new semi finishing Z level operation. Use the .500 end mill that was created in the first section. 2 You need to create new Mill Area geometry to contain the tool path to the inside of the cavity. The Method should be changed to MILL_SEMI_FINISH. 2-2 Fixed Axis Techniques– Workbook NX6 MT11065 Lesson 3 Fixed Contour finishing operations 3 In this lesson you will create Mill Area and Flowcut operations to begin finishing the cavity. You will create a new Mill Area and a fixed contour operation to finish the cavity, then you will create a Flowcut operation to cut the fillets and corners of the part. Step 1: Continue using the part ***_bowl_cavity-1_setup_1. Step 2: Create new Mill Area geometry. The bottom fillet of the bowl and the inside of the bowl will be included. You will add this as a child of the WORKPIECE. Fixed Axis Techniques– Workbook 3-1 Fixed Contour finishing operations Step 3: Create a CONTOUR_AREA operation to begin the finishing operations. You can use the .750 ball nose end mill that was previously created. Step 4: Create a new finishing operation to remove material left in the fillets of the cavity by the last tool. Use the .750 ball nose end mill that was created previously. Create a Flowcut Reference Tool operation. The reference tool will be the .750 tool used in the last operation. Step 5: Additional operations may be needed to finish the planar faces of the part. Create these operations using the tools and methods of your choice. 3 3-2 Fixed Axis Techniques– Workbook NX6 MT11065
