Diamond necklace
1. In the “Diamond necklace” story by Guy de Maupassant, a good lesson can be seen that
you should happy with who you are and what you have. Mathilde must be happy a lot
because she is beautiful and charming. In contrast, she dissatisfied with what she had and
always dreamed of being rich and in high social class. For example, she images that she
chatting with “imitate friend, with men famous and sought after, whom all women envy
and whose attention they all desire”. Moreover, she didn’t know that she had a good
husband, so she was unhappy in her life.
2. Honesty is extremely important even when the truth is very difficult to admit. When we
make mistakes, it is regrettable for us to tell the truth too late and meet the unexpected
things. In this story, Mathilde lost the diamond necklace for borrowing from her friend,
Madame Forestier after the night ball. Later, her husband advised her to tell lie her friend
that the diamond necklace was broke of the clasp and was being mended. After that, both
Mathilde and her husband replaced another diamond necklace which is too expensive.
For this reason, it is waste time for paying all debts because of the fake diamond
necklace. If they confessed immediately to Madame Forestier at first, they won’t suffer a
miserable life.
3. The most important thing is that we shouldn’t judge book by its cover. Mathilde never
sastified with her life and wanted to appear rich and high class. During the night ball, she
was happy because many people admired her and became successful. For example, all the
men looked at her, asked her name, sought to be introduced. Also, many people wished to
have pretty liked her because she appeared in an expensive diamond necklace and
beautiful dress. However, they cannot realize that the diamond necklace is fake.
Therefore, the appearance is deceptive.
4. The last theme of this story is that you have to pay an expensive price for their greed. You
don’t realize that you have some things you love. In addition, your ambition is so high
that you will lose the whole life. Mathilde was a beautiful and charming woman and
always dreamed of being rich and in high social class, but she didn’t work. At first, she
was angry about the invitation of the ball although her husband worked hard to get her it.
For instance, she threw the invitation on the table crossly. Although her husband bought
her a beautiful dress for his saving money, she felt upset and wanted to wear “a single
piece of jewelry”. Clearly, her greed was higher and higher when Madame Forestier lent
her jewelries. She is not pleasure to choose a jewelry in the large jewelry at first. For
example, Mathilde asks:“Do you have anything else, by chance?”. Finally, she chose the
expensive diamond necklace. Consequently, she has suffered a miserable life and worked
hard to pay all debts for ten years.
The Cat Who Thought She Was a Dog and the Dog Who Though He Was a Cat
1. The first them of this story is that we should take pride of our appearance. If we worried
about our appearance, we won’t have happy life. When the Skiba family saw their defects
in the mirror, they felt upset. For example, Marianna was pretty, but she had a tooth
missing in front, and she felt that this made her ugly. Later, they wanted to change their
appearances, but they didn’t have enough money to do. Like humans, animals have
problems when they saw themselves in the mirror. As a result, the cat and dog near killed
each other. Jan Skibas realizes the reason why they can see and admire everything, but
their appearances are not. After returning the mirror, the Skibas family was happy.
Finally, despite all the defects the girls had found in themselves, they made good
marriages.
2. Beauty is only skin deep. It is realized that the appearance is not important. As likely as
this story, the Skibas family was happy at first. Likewise, the animals haven’t seen their
images, so the dog thought who was a cat, and the cat thought he was a dog. However,
after having the mirror, they could see their defects clearly. Then they just cared about
their appearances, but they forgot what they had to do. That day, women of the house
became so absorbed in the mirror they didn’t cook supper, didn’t make up the bed and
neglected all other household tasks. Also, the cat and the dog confused their images in the
mirror and nearly killed each other. Therefore, the real image of a person is in his
willingness.
3. The valuable lesson is that vanity can destroy relationships. When people are poor, they
wished to have luxuries. From this point, they have troubles in their lives. For pets in
Skibas’ family, the cat Kot and the dog Burek were born at the same time and looked
after carefully. For example, Burek and Kot lived on good terms, often ate from the same
dish and tried to mimic each other. Obviously, although they didn’t how they looked like,
they are happy. After seeing themselves in the mirror, they confused. Because Kot and
Burek were pride of their appearances, Burek took a bit out of Kot’s throat and Kot
hissed and spat at him and clawed his muzzle. As a result, they were in the anguish.
4. Human greed is a cause of problems. In this story, the Skibas only have money for
necessary things. However, their ambitions were so high after buying the mirror. The
first person is Marianna who was pretty, but she doesn’t appreciate herself because of
“missing a tooth in front of”. After that, “she heard of a dentist in the big city who could
replace a missing tooth, but things were expensive”. Also, when three daughters saw their
defects in their faces, they felt upset. For example, although they try to console each other
to be pretty enough, they had been afflicted with the vanity of city girls. Thus, all
members felt as if they suffered poverty. In conclusion, human ambitions can cause
troubles in their lives.
The pearl
John Steinbeck
1. The first them of this story is that when something happens, you have to face the
problems. No matter what happens, you need to try all ways to solve the problems
instead of running away. For example, an accident could happen to these oysters, a
grain of sand could lie in the folds of muscle and irritated the flesh. After that, the
oyster protected itself by using a layer of smooth cement. As a result, the grain at first
became the pearl in the oyster. Therefore, you cannot have good things if you run
away the trouble.
2. Humans cannot violate God’ will. Because of their greed, they were against the nature
and tried all ways to do their dreams. From this story, John Steinbeck show us that
Kino wanted to buyers who offered a good price, so he made mistakes again and
again. Kino‘s family have to run away because Kino has killed the man. Then they got
into the fight which killed another man. Moreover, he only decided to return the pearl
in the nature when his son died of getting the trace bullet in the head. Therefore, when
Kino and Juana lost the baby, the pearl and all dreams no longer valued. Furthermore,
the neighbors didn’t talk to Kino and Juana, for they believed in God. Clearly, Kino
found the pearl, so he had to threw the pearl because of God’ will. Therefore, humans
should not go against the nature.
3. Vanity of human ambition is to fight the barrier between the rich and the poor. When
some people have ambitions, they can meet what they have never done. In this story, it
is difficult for Kino to sell the pearl because this is the first time a fisherman did
business. Also, although the Kino family was poor, they wanted to have different
identities. Their clothes were not new, but they dressed carefully. For example, Juana
combed and braided her hair and tied the ends with two little bows of red ribbon, and
she put on her marriage skirt and waist. Furthermore, their ambitions are high. Kino
didn’t sell the pearl for the first dealer, for the big pearl is “the pearl of the world”.
However, the pay of the pearl is less valuable. Therefore, humans have unrealistic
ambitions to fight the barrier the rich and the poor.
4. In this story, we can see that finding the pearl aims to tell fighting against the
discrimination between the rich and the poor. At first, when Coyotito was injured,
Juana called the doctor. However, he didn’t come because he was rich and only
worked for money. Therefore, there was the barrier between the rich and the poor. .
Furthermore, Juana used natural materials for curing the baby’s swollen because she
believed in God. This is a good remedy instead of using the doctor’s medicine. For
example, “she did not prayed for directly for the recovery the baby- she had prayed
that they might find a pearl with which to hire the doctor to cure the baby”. When
Kino found the pearl, he and Juana were happy. They believed that only money can
save their son and to fight the rich.
