INTRODUCTION
1. Reasons for choosing the topic
In the career of educating and training the army force and people in order to serve the building and
fighting of Vietnamese People’s Army, the artistic education plays a significant role. Different forms of artistic
education, particularly music education, will help to educate and improve the aesthetic knowledge and taste for
soldiers, completing the personality of a revolutionary soldier - a model soldier of Uncle Ho’s.
The history of 70 years of building, developing, fighting and wining of Vietnamese People’s Army
proved that the artistic education for soldiers through numerous songs about Uncle Ho’s soldiers, especially
those composited in the period of 1944 to 1975, is a vital part in the spiritual life of soldiers. The songs
about Uncle Ho’s soldiers which are classified as revolutionary songs of Vietnam, are a cultural product of
the new age when the whole nation has made great dedication and sacrifice in the two resistance wars in
attempt to regain our independence, freedom and union. Therefore, it plays a very important role in the
spiritual life of soldiers, especially when it is used as a type of materials for the artistic education of soldiers.
Since it is clearly aware of the role of artistic education for soldiers through songs about Uncle Ho’s
soldiers, the artistic education for soldiers through songs about Uncle Ho’s soldiers in the recent years has
been enthusiastically deployed by all the organizations and units in the army force, bringing about
remarkable achievements. However, the artistic education for soldiers through songs about Uncle Ho’s
soldiers remains limitations and shortcomings both in the awareness and the practical organization.
In the current period, in the face to the demand and mission of building and defending our
fatherland of Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the demand and mission of training and getting ready for
fighting and performing the functions and missions of the army force, as well as the operation and
production demand of Vietnamese People’s Army in general and each army organization or unit in
particular in the new context of the whole world, the local region and the home country, the artistic
education for soldiers through songs about Uncle Ho’s soldiers has become the most important and
urgent.
For the recent times, a number of researches from different approaches have focused on
interpreting the artistic education, offering both theoretical and practical findings with scientific values.
Nonetheless, there still lacks of researches deeply studying the artistic education for soldiers through
songs about Uncle Ho’s soldiers, especially those composited in the period of 1944 to 1975. For all the
above reasons, the doctoral candidate chose the topic “The artistic education for soldiers at the time
being through the songs about Uncle Ho’s soldiers (composed in the period of 1944 to 1975) as my
dissertation title.
2. The study objectives
Based on the theories on the artistic education in general and the artistic education through the
songs about Uncle’s Ho soldiers, the doctoral candidate made analysis, discussion and assessment on the
real situation, recommending the solutions of applying such findings from the research on the artistic
education for soldiers at the being time through the songs about Uncle Ho’s soldiers, and satisfying the
demand of educating the aesthetic knowledge for soldiers and cultivating the personality for a model
soldier.
3. Object and scope of the study
3.1. Object of the study
Art Education for soldiers through songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers.
3.2. Scope of the study
In term of theory, foreign materials used in the dissertation in overview research of art education
are mainly documents originated from Russia collected from the electronic library of the Institute of Art
Education under Russian Academy of Art Education from 1999 up to now. Besides, the dissertation also
studies, synthesizes and inherits the translated foreign materials in the arts and art education and several
works of local authors. The songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers composed in the period from 1944 to 1975
was collected in the collection named “ Uncle Ho's Soldiers through the musical works” of Military
University of Culture and Arts. Moreover, it also extends songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers in the
collection: "The timeless marching songs (nh ng khúc quân hành v t th i gian)” (2004), the People's
Army Publishing House; "Singing on the fighting way” (Hát trên
ng ánh gi c)” (1999), Young
Publishing House and the song collection “ Day & Night songs (Hành khúc ngày và êm)” 2004), Hanoi
Publishing House.
In practice, art education research for the current soldiers through songs of Uncle Ho's soldiers,
there is a survey at some typical units such as grassroot units, the academies and training schools of
technical officer and political officers, art organizations during the period from 2002 to present.
4. The working hypothesis
Art education through songs of Uncle Ho's soldiers in the army will aim to raise receptor and
performance capacity of songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers, orient music tastes, ensuring the development
of aesthetic awareness for soldiers in case:
4.1. This issue at the academies, schools and grasssroot units is clarified from a theoretical basis on
art education and art education through songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers.
4.2. In practice in the training of soldiers - artists, the matters of music theory, songs Uncle Ho's
soldiers, skills, performing skills, historical knowledge, culture and national traditions are the synthetic
knowledge source controlling entirely the process of creative thinking development and performance of
the artist. At the grassroot units, the academies, schools, the value of these songs, along with forms and
methods of art education for soldiers through songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers should make accessibility
to music knowledge, as a condition for raising the soldiers’ capacity of aesthetic perception, appraisal of
songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers, with the right choice of genuine musical work, satisfying and improving
spiritual life, personality orientation, political education and self-education to achieve the goal of
comprehensive education.
4.3. The solutions are built with a theoretical and practical basis in accordance with the
characteristics of military culture environment, in consistent with the practices of art and cultural
activities of today's country and in compliance with requirements to raise the spiritual life of soldiers,
especially the demand for enjoying songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers during the nowadays revolution.
5. Theory and study method
The dissertation is deployed from the perspective of Marxism - Leninism and Ho Chi Minh
ideology and cultural ways of the Party; theory of the spread of Vugotxki and viewpoints on the art
reception of Marx- Lenin to be used as a basis for issues presented in the dissertation.
The ethnographic fieldwork as a key method is used in the dissertation. It also use the
interdisciplinary approaching method; analysis and syndissertation of materials which are curriculum
content, music curriculum of Military University of Culture and Arts, the work reports of the arts culture
in army units, combined with depth interviews with managers, creative artists, the art leaders, the public
as soldiers in the study and the assessment of art education activities for the current soldiers through
songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers composed from 1944 to 1975.
6. The findings and contributions of the dissertation
- Systematizing basically a general theory of art education.
- Forming a general theory about the songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers.
- Analyzing theory and the factors affecting the artistic education for the current soldiers through songs
about Uncle Ho’s soldiers.
- Providing information and a comprehensive assessment of the status of art education for the
current soldiers through songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers (the art units, academies, schools, grassroot
units)
- Applying the theory of the spread of Vugotxki and viewpoints on the art reception of Marxist Leninist aesthesis to demonstrate the impact of art education through songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers on
enjoying the arts, forming the art tastes, contributing in orientation towards the overall development of
soldiers’ personality.
- Establishing and building some basic measures to improve the efficiency of the Art Education for
the current soldiers through songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers.
7. The structure of the dissertation
The dissertation consisting of 227 pages is divided into two parts, the main text and appendices.
The main part consists of 150 text pages: the opening (8 pages), conclusions and recommendations (3
pages), references (12 pages), 3 chapters of the dissertation content (125 pages).

Chapter 2: The artistic education for soldiers through songs about Uncle Ho’s soldiers - Theories
and Real Situation (56 pages).

Chapter 1
THEORIES OF THE ARTISTIC EDUCATION
1.1. Art and the conception of art education
1.1.1. Art
Art is conceived and interpreted differently according awareness of the different philosophical
perspectives in the awareness history in general and awareness of the arts in particular. The appearance of
Marxist-Leninist philosophy has brought the great turning point in the development history of aesthetic
ideas and solved in a scientifically manner the nature of art. Marxist - Leninist aesthesis has put art in
true place as a product of highly leveled consciousness of human; as a product of the creative activity of
human with the selected materials or format (music, dance, theater, sculpture, painting ...) to convey
ideas, feelings, practical activities of human to create works satisfying the enjoy pleasure.
1.1.2. The conception of art education
Art education is an education field of the spiritual life of society associated with the arts. Art
education includes the entire understanding and knowledge, features, skills of human in terms of art to
foster and improve aesthetics capacity, art knowledge, art ideal direction and art taste for human.
1.2. The function of art education
The first function of art education is to educate the art enjoying capacity. This function is used as a
solid basis for the development of the art qualities of the subjects educated.
Art education should also build the art subjects with a full range of artistic qualities, abilities and
aesthetic possibilities.
1.3. The theory of art education
1.3.1. The theory of the spread
Vugotxki has mentioned us to the aspect of the quality change of artistic creativity. Vugotxki has
come from the analysis and interpretation of the music concepts of Tonxtoi; analysis of the rhythm
concept of Nitso; analysis of Buikher’s concept of determining the origin of the songs, Petragitxki’s
concept of emotional stimuli purpose of art ... to demonstrate the impact role of art in social life on
theoretical basis of the spread. With this theory, the psychologically applied studies such as art education
for human, including art education in music that will have the basis for effective research applications.
1.3.2. Viewpoints on the art reception
According to the Marxist – Leninist aesthesis, we, in contact with the art, are impacted to all living
areas from its aesthetic aspect. Art Education is a form of bringing to people the knowledge, the
experience of being exposed to art through life scenarios, the fates, the vivid images filled with emotion.
The viewpoint of the art reception of Marxist - Leninist aesthesis take us to the affirmation that: there is
no understanding of art, there is no excitement and passion for artistic appreciation.
1.4. Condition of art education
It is necessary to have following conditions for art education to be effective such as: the subject of
art education, the receptor of art education, and the assurance factor for implementation of art education.
With a research limit of the dissertation, the subject of art education and the receptor of art education are
military bodies, units and people. These factors shall be clarified in the next sections of this dissertation.
The theoretical part of art education, the dissertation refers to the content of art education and art
education materials as one of the prerequisites of art education process.
1.4.1. The content of art education
The main content of art education towards to build the enjoying capacity and the art tastes to the
public. On the basis of the basic content of the aesthetic education of the Marxist - Leninist aesthesis, art
education should be established in basic artistic contents: (1) The art consciousness; (2) the art reason;
(3) the art knowledge; (4) the art capacity; (5) the art culture of the individual.
1.4.2. Some art education materials
There are only a few materials commonly uses in art education directly related to the research
scope of the dissertation.
* Aesthetics and Art studies in Art Education
Marxist – Leninist aesthetics is a doctrine studying, summarizing and drawing aesthetic reasons and
artistic reasons; is an aesthetic reasoning system - rich art with perfect whole characteristic, both providing
art knowledge and acting as methodology for enhancing knowledge, identifying tastes and ideals of art,
thereby build capacity of perception, assessment and artistic creation for art subjects.
* The art forms in art education
Education by art forms comes into people's mind voluntarily and gives vast and lasting
performance. The beauty of art makes people passionate and willing to follow to its suggestive directions.
If the art is considered as a sharp tool, art education in the art helps users of such tool to enrich their
spiritual world effectively.
* Music in Art Education
Music is the art form to use sound to express thoughts, feelings, emotions, desires and aspirations
of human. There are two types of music including instrumental and vocal music. Depending on the target,
object, and specific environment using musical material as a song or instrumental music to implementing
art education. Each type promotes different advantages in the implementation of art education to the
public. But perhaps awareness educational purposes for the public will achieve optimum performance
when songs are used as educational materials by suggestive function of language in music genre.
Summary of the chapter 1
In human history, the birth of art is an indispensability and it is constantly evolving with the
development of human civilization. Man can not live without art. In order to understand art, percept and
receive aesthetic values contained in each work of art, people need to be equipped with the knowledge,
artistic skills, along with fostered aesthetic capacity, means that is needed art education process. Art
education not only contributes to improve and enrich the human spiritual world, but also has a special
impact on the development of human qualities. But art education can only achieve this result only when
art education process is done uniformly from theory to practice: promoting optimally social function of
art education, building art educational content and using art education materials art in accordance with
practices on the basis of applying the theories of art education respectively.
Chapter 2
THE ARTISTIC EDUCATION FOR SOLDIERS THROUGH SONGS ABOUT UNCLE HO'S
SOLDIERS - THEORY AND REALITY
2.1. Songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers and the role of songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers
2.1.1. Uncle Ho's soldiers and some outline of songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers
* The term Uncle Ho's soldiers
In the long heroic struggle of our nation, the Vietnam People's Army was born and developed from
the people. Officers and soldiers of the People's Army of Vietnam, from the generals to private soldiers
are loved by whole population and complimented with noble titles, but also very casual, close and dear, "
Uncle Ho's soldiers ". Uncle Ho's soldiers are reflected in the heights and new depths of character, spirit
and cultural manner of Vietnam, the blending of nation and class, tradition and modernity, becoming a
typical value for the Vietnamese people in Ho Chi Minh era and acted as a kind of personality, a unique
symbol of the revolutionary army culture.
* An overview of the birth and development of songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers
In the 40 years of the twentieth century, the need for revolutionary propaganda is very necessary.
From there, the music, but more specifically the songs become media propaganda. In fact, at this stage of
history, songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers composed from 1944 to 1975 are songs of Vietnam
revolutionary line, but brings its own unique artistic image, which the image of Uncle Ho's soldiers with
aggregate content reflecting the values and characters of Uncle Ho's soldiers in the two protracted
national wars.
2.1.2. Features in the lyrics of songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers composed from 1944 to 1975
* The lyrical image of songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers composed in anti-French war
In the war against the French (1944 - 1954), the image through lyrics of songs about Uncle Ho's
soldiers has described this early stage as the revolutionary masses. Uncle Ho's Soldiers of the anti-French
years of the first period are just farmers and the poor lost their country, suicide for their country, the
struggle to seize the government. Such ideology and such spirit has created a type of image and

developed more widely and more abundantly, of course, to lead to a rich and diverse content of songs

social life with both manners: the aesthetic object and perceptive object. As an aesthetic object, these
songs give people aesthetic emotion takes shape of aesthetic predilection and develops aesthetic ideal.
And as perceptive object, songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers in interaction with humans will reveal the
nature, regularity and specificity ... that people can be aware to generalize the system of categories,
concepts, scientific principles about a certain type of art. That is the path of aesthetic awareness from the

By the close lyrics, catchy tunes, along with the feature of a kind of art expression, songs about
Uncle Ho's soldiers will impact to soldiers under the way from emotional to ration, from reality to think,
imagination that lead to spiritual refreshment. The pleasure resulted from language and sounds of songs
about Uncle Ho's soldiers is the aesthetic pleasure - a pleasure just entertain, just as serene soul, bringing
full euphoria of truth – kindness - beauty.

There are different forms and methods, such as: through the education and training at Military University
of Culture and Arts; through performances and concerts of professional and unprofessional artistic groups;
through cultural and artistic festivals annually held at all levels, organizations and units; through seminars,
debates, exchanges and forums on culture and arts in military organizations and units; through artistic
movements of public communities, especially common activities in the military organizations and units, and the
actions of making friends ad exchanging with the local communities in order to organize the activities of artistic
education for soldiers at the time being through songs about Uncle Ho’s soldiers.
2.2.2. The factors affecting the artistic education for soldiers at the time being through songs about Uncle
Ho’s soldiers
The geographical distribution of the stationed military units spreading across the country facilitates
the army to absorb unique culture of the region, the localities and groups of people. This makes the
cultural & artistic activities in the army more diverse, abundant and vibrant.
In many recent years, the cultural & artistic activities organized frequently, regularly and
widespreadly in the military units are the requirements set out for the need to improve the efficiency of
the art education for soldiers. From the reality, the enjoying conditions and aesthetic appreciation of
soldiers and the public about today art has been changed by the military cultural environment, duties and
activities and social fluctuations in the new era of society.
Firstly, the market economy of -oriented socialism impacts to art education in the army
Secondly, exchange and cultural integration impacts to enjoying predilection for the art of soldiers
Thirdly, the impacts of the strong development of science and technology, and from changes of the
current education
Fourthly, the task of a new era army sets out requirements for art education for current soldiers
The army is the key force in building and defending the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, associated
with beautiful pictures of Uncle Ho's soldiers, therefore art education have to become an art education
content of the whole society with the common goal of building the new people, comprehensive human
development and harmony. The vitality, the spread, the ability to foster soul, personality of songs about
Uncle Ho's soldiers become sustainable social effects before it becomes an indispensable requirement for
Art education in the army.
2.3. The reality of art education for the current soldiers through songs about Uncle Ho's
soldiers
Currently in the Army, Art Education for soldiers through songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers is
manifested in artistic and cultural educational activities and enjoying and art performances. This activity
takes place in the whole army, organized through the performances of 12 professional art units and
cultural activities in grassroot units through the organization of cultural institutions: Ho Chi Minh rooms,
Club and culture House.
Based on the reality research objectives for the art education for current soldiers through songs
about Uncle Ho's soldiers composed in 1944 and 1975, sociological inspections with surveying sample at
comprehensive scale are conducted to reflect the representation of military units from academia, schools
and grassroot units. The results reflect rather comprehensively the status of art education for the current
soldiers through songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers. The dissertation generalizes the reality of art education
through songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers in the today army with some typical representations as follows:
2.3.1. Achievements of art education for the current soldiers through songs about Uncle Ho's
soldiers
* Art education activity of the Military University of Culture and Arts
* Performance activity of songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers of the military professional performing
unit
* Performance activity of songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers of the grassroot units, academics and
schools.
2.3.2. General assessment
2.3.2.1. Achievements and causes
* Achievements:
Firstly, there is a strong evolution in the perception of executive committees, commander, political
agencies at all levels of receivers (soldiers) about the position and role of art education through songs
about Uncle Ho's soldiers.
Secondly, there is a close coordination between units and forces in Art Education through songs
about Uncle Ho's soldiers in conformity with each type of unit.
Thirdly, the program content, methods of art education through songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers
are positively innovated.
Fourthly, the quality of art education through songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers is improved.
*The reasons for above results:
Firstly, the positive and proactive leadership and direction of the committees, unit commander and
the guidance of political institutions at all levels in Art Education.
Secondly, there has been a positive change of forces, units in enjoying and performing the art

the ability to spread the emotions has an impact on the human soul through contact and reception of art.
From true emotional art, the enjoyers will absorb the good things, the beauty of art to bring the emotional
vibration and towards human to the truth, kindness, beauty. Therefore, in spite of being the composer,
performers or enjoyer, you are necessary to have a certain understanding of music as a basis for forming
emotion, cognitive reality, perceived reality, assessment, thus creating the aesthetic viewpoints for
composing, performing and enjoying art. Saying like that, musicians, performers and enjoyers need to
participate in the process of art education. Based on the theories on the artistic education in general
from the perspective of Marxism - Leninism and the stady of arts education for the public in the
country and the world, the doctoral candidate made analysis, discussion and assessment on the real
situation, recommending the solutions of applying such findings from the research on the artistic
education for soldiers at the being time through the songs about Uncle Ho’s soldiers, and satisfying the
demand of educating the aesthetic knowledge for soldiers and cultivating the personality for a model
soldier.
3.1.2. The study findings of songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers

developing and training beings, to help the process of formation and human adequate development in

enjoy capabilities, artistic creativity, raising and developing spiritual values, forming, fostering and
perfecting personality.

satisfy the needs and enjoy capabilities, artistic creativity, thereby fostering and developing cultural
values in personality of officers, and soldiers, partially contributing in the comprehensive building of the
unit.

Uncle Ho's soldiers, it is necessary to clarify the value of this kind of song in the spiritual life of

officers and soldiers; foster new humans for the army and the country.
5. In recent years, under the leadership of the Central Military Commission, Ministry of Defense
and Party committee, the spiritual life of soldiers are concerned and improved by organizing the activities
of the artistic education for soldiers through songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers (composed in the period of
1944 to 1975). It has high ideology, directs mainly at the revolutionary ideal education, inspires pride of
nation and military traditions to educate discipline, honor, military responsibilities, to maintain and
promote the quality of Uncle Ho's soldiers in the current era. However, the artistic education for soldiers
through songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers still remains a number of shortcomings and limitations. Both
achievements and shortcomings in the artistic education for soldiers through songs about Uncle Ho's

6. Based on the discussions on the findings of the research on the theory and real situation of the
