Matmata is a very unusual place and a favorite tourist destination. Why? Because of its underground homes! In Matmata, the Berber people build their homes under the ground. This is a one-thousand year old tradition. Today, there are more than 100 underground houses and there is even an underground hotel! The climate in Tunisia is very hot, so living under the ground is a very good idea! The temperature is always the same. At night, when the desert is very cold, it is comfortably warm in a cave and during the day when the sun shines down, the caves are cool. The houses are 16 to 32 feet deep and they have many small rooms used for sleeping, keeping food, and getting together. You can go from one room to another through small tunnels. Life is simple here.
