Most of this water is not easily 4 Tuyển tập 120 đề thi thử đại học môn Tiếng Anh năm 2014 (có đáp án kèm theo) Phần 2 (từ đề 60 đề 120) available to man because it is locked in glaciers and icecaps. There is as much water on earth today as there ever was or will ever be. Most of the water we use finds its way to the oceans. There, it is evaporated by the sun. It then falls back to the earth as rain. Water is used and reused over again. It is never used up. Although the world as a whole has plenty of fresh water, some regions have a water shortage. Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark is important. Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no bounds. It can take place where, whether in the shower or on the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a reserved grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has certain predictability, education quite often produce surprise. A change conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is know of other religions. People are engaged in education from infancy on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is a lifelong process, a process that starts long before the start of school and one that should be an integral part of one’s entire life. Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take assigned seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbook, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learnt, whether they are the alphabet or an understanding of the workings of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subject being taught. For example, high school students know that they are not likely to find out in their class the truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding the formalized process of schooling. Question 76: What does the author probably mean by using the expression “children interrupt their education to go to school”? A. Going to several different schools is educationally beneficial. B. The development of advanced radio telescopes has allowed astronomers to attempt to answer a question that has long intrigued scientists, philosophers, and laypersons alike: Do other forms of intelligent life exist elsewhere in the universe? Although the legends of many ancient cultures hold that divine beings created the heavens and controlled such cosmic events as eclipses, the idea that other planets harbor life similar in development and intelligence to our own did not become popular until the nineteenth century, when a few scientists considered ways in which earthlings might contact other beings. One plan envisioned the building of huge canals in the desert in the shape of easily recognizable geometric symbols; when filled with gasoline and ignited, the canals would signal the presence of life on Earth to neighboring worlds. Since then, many astronomers have become seriously interested in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, or SETI. They assume that alien beings elsewhere in the galaxy will probably try to contact earthlings, using flashes of light to carry their messages. In 1960 one astronomer performed one of the first serious searches for extraterrestrial life, called Project Ozma. The astronomer turned a sensitive radio telescope in the direction of nearby stars Tau Ceti and Epsilon Eridani but found no transmissions that might be beacons from extraterrestrial civilizations. Since Project Ozma, about four dozen other searches have been conducted. No one has yet received an unambiguous signal from an extraterrestrial civilization, and numerous false alarms have been caused by interference from radio-wave sources here on Earth. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA, has also been involved in SETI and sought funding from the United States Congress to build a complete receiver and to undertake a ten-year search program. One half of this search plan calls for using radio telescopes in its Deep-Space Network to repeatedly scan the entire sky. The other half involves using its 1,000-foot telescope to listen to nearby stars similar to the Sun that may have Earthlike planets orbiting around them. Although scientists realize their survey will be far from complete, they believe the search must begin with small efforts. Said one scientist: "We're new at this business, and when you walk into a dark, unfamiliar forest, you should probably listen before you shout." Question 36 What does the passage mainly discuss? A. The word robot first appeared in a 1921 stage play by Czech writer Karel Capek. In the play, a man makes a machine that can think, which he calls a robot and which ends up killing its owner. In the 1940s, the American science fiction writer Isaac Asimov wrote a series of stories about robots and invented the term robotics, the science of robots. Meanwhile, in the real world, the first robots were developed by an engineer, Joseph F. Engelberger, and an inventor, George C. Devol. Together they started Unimation, a manufacturing company that produces the first real robot in 1961, called the Unimate. Robots of this type were installed at a General Motors automobile plant and proved to be a success. They worked reliably and saved money for General Motors, so other companies were soon acquiring robots as well. These industrial robots were nothing like the terrifying creatures that can often be seen in science fiction films. In fact, these robots looked and behaved nothing like humans. They were simply pieces of computercontrolled machinery, with metal “arms” or “hands”. Since they were made of metal, they could perform certain jobs that were difficult or dangerous for humans, particularly jobs that involve high heat. And since robots were tireless and never got hungry, sleepy, or distracted, they were useful for tasks that would be tiring or boring for humans. Industrial robots have been improved over the years, and today they are used in many factories around the world. Though the use of robots has meant the loss of some jobs, at the same time other jobs have been created in the design, development, and production of the robots. [1]  Outside of industry, robots have also been developed and put to use by governments and scientists in situations where humans might be in danger. For example, they can be sent in to investigate an unexploded bomb or an accident at a nuclear power plant. [2] In space exploration, robots have performed many key tasks where humans could not be present, such as on the surface of Mars. [3] In 2004, two robotic Roverssmall six-wheeled computerized cars were sent to Mars. [4] Question 46 When did the word “robot” appear? Đọc bài khóa sau và chọn phương án đúng (ứng với A hoặc B, C, D) cho các câu từ 51 đến 60: A recent survey of crime statistics shows that we are all more likely to be burgled now than 20 years ago and the police advise everyone to take a few simple precautions to protect their homes. The first fact is that burglars and other intruders prefer easy opportunities, like a house which is very obviously empty. This is much less of a challenge than an occupied house, and one which is well-protected. A burglar will wonder if it is worth the bother. There are some general tips on how to avoid your home becoming another crime statistic. Avoid leaving signs that your house is empty. When you have to go out, leave at least one light on as well as a radio or television, and do not leave any curtains wide open. The sight of your latest music centre or computer is enough to tempt any burglar. 16 Tuyển tập 120 đề thi thử đại học môn Tiếng Anh năm 2014 (có đáp án kèm theo) Phần 2 (từ đề 60 đề 120) Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place. The first place a burglar will look is under the doormat or in a flower pot and even somewhere more 'imaginative' could soon be uncovered by the intruder. It is much safer to leave a key with a neighbour you can trust. But if your house is in a quiet, desolate area be aware that this will be a burglar's dream, so deter any potential criminal from approaching your house by fitting security lights to the outside of your house. But what could happen if, in spite of the aforementioned precautions, a burglar or intruder has decided to target your home. Windows are usually the first point of entry for many intruders. Downstairs windows provide easy access while upstairs windows can be reached with a ladder or by climbing up the drainpipe. Before going to bed you should double-check that all windows and shutters are locked. No matter how small your windows may be, it is surprising what a narrow gap a determined burglar can manage to get through. For extra security, fit window locks to the inside of the window. What about entry via doors? Your back door and patio doors, which are easily forced open, should have top quality security locks fitted. Even though this is expensive it will be money well spent. Install a burglar alarm if you can afford it as another line of defense against intruders. A sobering fact is that not all intruders have to break and enter into a property. Why go to the trouble of breaking in if you can just knock and be invited in? Beware of bogus officials or workmen and, particularly if you are elderly, fit a chain and an eye hole so you can scrutinise callers at your leisure. When you do have callers never let anybody into your home unless you are absolutely sure they are genuine. Ask to see an identity card, for example. If you are in the frightening position of waking in the middle of the night and think you can hear an intruder, then on no account should you approach the intruder. It is far better to telephone the police and wait for help. 51. A well-protected house ____. A. is less likely to be burgled. B. is regarded as a challenge by most criminals. Đọc bài khóa sau và chọn phương án đúng (ứng với A hoặc B, C, D) cho các câu từ 61 đến 70: What I love about my job is the variety. I get enquiries from people all over the world asking me 17 Tuyển tập 120 đề thi thử đại học môn Tiếng Anh năm 2014 (có đáp án kèm theo) Phần 2 (từ đề 60 đề 120) how they should go about setting up their own website. I’ve been asked about so many subjects -- anything from someone wanting to teach people how to throw boomerangs to another people selling paper flowers which they make at home in their spare time. Obviously with all the thousands of websites available at the click of a button, you want to create an impression with your website so that it becomes a must-see destination. Not everyone is prepared, however, for the way in which a website can become so popular that it actually has to be closed down. When people first set up their websites they probably pay their web advertiser a monthly fee based on the number of hits or page impressions their site receives. If they can pay their monthly fee without it costing them too much, that is the best that most people hope for. One guy, Pete Bennett, whom I helped, wanted to set up a one-stop shop to provide decent images of the world’s flags. He’d been fascinated by flags since his boyhood and had no idea that thousands of other people share his passion. Anyway, in one month his web page had over 1.5 million hits. As a result his internet provider trebled the fee that he was being charged. He wasn’t a rich person and he couldn’t afford to spend that amount of money on a hobby without any benefit to him, so he decided to carry advertising on his site. He found a company which specializes in smaller sites and adverts were added to the pages on his website. So, although he doesn’t make a huge profit, at least his hobby provides him with a small income. If you have specialist skills or expertise, it can pay you to sell the products that people want. I helped one woman design a page to advertise the fact that she tells fortunes, based on the information that her clients supply her with. If you want her to tell your fortune, you fill in a questionnaire online -- your age, date of birth, hobbies, interests and so on and for a small fee she e-mails you back your fortune. You can print it out and it looks really good, decorated with moons and stars, your zodiac sign and your birthstone. I tried it myself and although I’m not sure I believe it, my future according to her is positive and exciting. I also found out that for someone born in August, like me, the birthstone is a peridot, a pale green stone which I’d never even heard of! I also get a fair number of complaints from people e-mailing me to say that they can’t access the website. When they click on the site a message appears on their screen saying ‘An error has occurred in the script on this page’. This usually happens when someone has tried to achieve fancy effects on their website by using programming techniques based on a scripting language. This means that unless they really know what they are doing, whoever designed the site has probably made a mistake in their programming. This is where people like me come in. Most computer instruction guides make things appear quite straightforward, but unless you’re very skilled, you’re likely to run into problems. It’s generally worth getting a professional to help you set up your site in the first place -- otherwise people like me would be out of work. And let’s face it, this is big business. 61. In computer animation, although the computer may be the one to draw the different frames, in most cases the artist will draw the beginning and ending frames and the computer will produce the drawings between the first and the last drawing. This is generally referred to as computerassisted animation, because the computer is more of a helper than an originator. In full computer animation, complex mathematical formulas are used to produce the final sequences of pictures. These formulas operate on extensive databases of numbers that defines the objects in the pictures as they exist in mathematical space. The database consists of endpoints, and color and intensity information. Highly trained professionals are needed to produce such effects because animation that obtains high degrees of realism involves computer techniques from three-dimensional transformation, shading, and curvatures. High-tech computer animation for film involves very expensive computer systems along with special color terminals or frame buffers. The frame buffer is nothing more than a giant image memory for viewing a single frame. It temporarily holds the image for display on the screen. A camera can be used to film directly from the computer’s display screen, but for the highest quality images possible, expensive film recorders are used. The computer computers the positions and colors for the figures in the picture, and sends this information to the recorder, which captures it on film. Sometimes, however, the images are stored on a large magnetic disk before being sent to the recorder. Once this process is completed, it is replaced for the next frame. When the entire sequence has been recorded on the film, the film must be developed before the animation can be viewed. If the entire sequence does not seem right, the motions must be corrected, recomputed, redisplayed, and rerecorded. This approach can be very expensive and time- consuming. Often, computer-animation companies first do motion tests with simple computergenerated line drawings before selling their computers to the task of calculating the high-resolution, realistic-looking images.
